I'm looking into purchasing a leftover tag for this area, but seems there are A BUNCH of leftover tags for cow/calf. Is there a reason behind this that I'm not aware of? Are the numbers not there? Too much private land? What's the deal. I'm just looking to take a cow and get out of dodge, I need some meat for the family, but if I take to much time away from work that won't help me either. Thanks.

Mike
I think that there is a lot of private land there. 6 and 7 have lots of elk, but access can be sketchy, I believe. Hopefully, somebody else can chime in with more info.
There is a fair amount of public land on pole mountain but you will be competing with the road hunters and atv crowd as there are roads all over the place.

The elk are known for beating feet to private when shooting starts.

Not a tag I was ever interested in and the unit is 15 minutes from my front door.

Unit 10 should have plenty of left overs as well. Only 30 minutes west of town. Some similar problems in that unit as well, large road hunting circus and elk skipping for private but much more public land to hunt.
I don't know that unit. But in some units the tags sell out but not until right before the hunts start.

No tags left in area 10 this year, and leftovers in area 6 are good only off the National Forest.
Wow. Odd year. 10 almost always makes it with left over cow/calf tags until about late October.

They cut the number this year.
Still looking for them dang elk. Still leftover tags, just no place to hunt them.
