Will be working up handloads with premium bullets for accuracy and velocity.

Will have dope out to 500 but hope for 300 and under.

With good bullets placed properly it won't make a bit of difference. 260 might be easier to shoot in a light rifle. Maybe.

Whichever one is the Kimber. They were made for elk country.

I shot a cow last fall with a .260, and it fell quicker that perhaps any elk I have ever killed.

I have both a 6.5cm and a 308. I think the 260 will work but it's kinda on the light side. I would opt for the 308 with 165 gr bullets myself. Then again the last two elk I shot were with a 270 with 130 gr bullets. At the end of the day it's all about shot placement so which every one ur most comfortable with use it.

I've only killed one bull elk with a .308 Win. so that doesn't count for much. No problem with putting the elk on the ground.

That said, my cousin (now deceased) killed 22 elk over the years with his Win. 70 Lightweight .308 Win. He was not a reloader so he used factory ammo. I asked him once what it was and he said he always used 180 grains PSP, Rem., Fed., Win. Didn't make much difference to him. He also killed an Idaho Shiras bull moose with it, a Black bear, plus many Mule deer.

A .308 Win. worked very well for him.

I've shot Elk with both. They both work. The 260 is sure nice to shoot.

I've got a T3 in 260 that sticks 125 Partitions into half moa like a machine, even with me shooting. I have a Montana in 308 that shoots 150 NABs under an inch (even with me shooting).

When I think elk, I think steep and long. That is why I find myself reaching for the Montana most often. But I wouldn't be too bothered by toting the 7-pound T3.

I've shot a few elk with a .270 using 130 gr bullets. Worked just fine. Either will be deadly.

Toss-up.

I'd take the .260 with 140 grain loads if it shoots well. And I have - 1 elk, several caribou, and a wolf, so far. All bang/flops to almost 400 yards on caribou (150 on elk).

Because that's what I have and that's what it likes. Mine is a Remington 725SA, with a light contour 700TI stainless barrel on it, sporting a 2-7 Leupold VXII scope. Real nice gun to carry on a mountain. Original, but really ugly stock... It works just fine as is....

But I may screw a .308 barrel on a 700 (currently in .243, but accuracy isn't all that good) for a deer/elk rifle for my Colorado son if he ever gets around to getting his hunter safety card... Or maybe a 7-08... Probably take that pretty wood stock off and put on Tupperware to lighten it up some.

My son used a 308 and 168 NBT to put a cow elk down last year.

I don't know if it matters which, but if you wanted a new rifle you could always split the difference with a 7mm-08!

Went with a .308 for Daughter #1. She will be using a 130g TTSX or a 150g AB. If I have time I might work up a 150g TTSX load but that isn't looking likely.

Either the .260 or .308 will work. Take what you shoot best.

No experience with the 260, but I love the 308 with 155 scenars, and varget powder. A great combo. The scenars work well on game, and are very accurate.

I have used the 308, with 180 grain factory loads, no problem. Did I need 180 when 165 would have worked just fine, I believe in over kill. I don't like to walk very far tracking animals.

Some other hunters that were in "camp" at the same time were using 300WM and 7MM. All worked.

Reminds me of a 7-08 140 NBT raghorn bull kill. "The deadest elk I ever seen..." Load worked up before we had a chronograph. About 80 yards, hit broadside low in the front end, fell dead without so much as a kick. Later this load was clocked at 2200FPS and dubbed the 30-30 load.

Was that a Blue Dot load, or Trail Boss?
