Our second elk of the year was much further from the road than the first one! My oldest son is a much better shot than the step son was earlier. For those that care about such things, 30-06 with 168 gr TTSX at 250 yards pack out was a bit over a mile down in the bottom of that valley in the photo. Nothing wrong with a full freezer.
That will keep you young. Congrats!
and yet it made me feel old!
Congrats on the elk AND the downhill pack trip! Way to hunt smart.
Congrats! Are you hand loading the TTSX?
Good planning, nothing better than a downhill packout without a lot of heavy brush.
Down hill way better than the other way around! Love a heavy pack in elk country.
Congrats to your kid.

Did you consider just gutting and riding it down the snowy hill? smile
Is that an old Boy Scout pack frame?
A man of experience, truly. Killed his critter uphill!
It is an old boy scout pack frame! Also, i do load my own TTSXs.
I like the downhill packs, but in our area all the packs are uphill. That makes you feel old.

I've tried that.

Turns out elk don't have runners and are hard to steer.........

Yessir, the weight of success! Have been very happy myself with the 168gr TTSX from a 30-06.
Looks good to me! I have gotten tired of hauling all of it in a pack. As long as there is a couple inches of snow, the sled has taken over as the preferred means of moving the meat. I can get a boned-out cow out in one trip by myself-as long as the country is not totally prohibitive.
Nice
