I have accumulated 20 Colorado preference points for elk. I'm turning 70 in a week and I'm thinking that maybe I ought to spend my points while I can still get around. Looks like point creep may keep unit 201 permanently out of my reach. The Wolf Springs Ranch recently has been sold to the Navajo Nation. So it's RFW status is unknown. Looking elsewhere.

Who here is familiar with Colorado GMU-01? Pretty small. Only 11 elk licenses offered. But not too many applicants. Looks like it's mostly public land and lots of access. Maybe too much access? Do the elk get chased away? Are there many elk there? Do they migrate out of the unit at times? What's a good place to start scouting?

If you call hopping rimrock 'lots of access'. No public access from up on top thru the Rasmussen. It is a foot hunters area. Hard to get a horse around in there except topside. I hunted it from Chokecherry and most of the elk were on the utah side of the fence. Quite a few CP&w guys hunt it, but they're allowed to hunt the Rasmussen......

Thanks for the news on the Wolf Springs ranch. That is an interesting development.

Don:

What is the Rasmussen? A private ranch?

Yeah. The private land and access on top from the utah side. And they have most of the water except for the river and chokecherry draw

Maybe that's why there aren't too many applicants. Guess I'll look elsewhere.

A guy sent me a PM and recommended a thread on another forum. Long thread. Lots of posts and discussion. It is pretty negative regarding GMU 1.

GMU 1 is rough with limited or difficult access.

However, with 20 PP you should be able to get into unit 10. I drew early rifle in 10 this year and made an awesome hunt. As with any of the units in NW Colorado it has its pros and cons but is certainly worth consideration. Shoot me a PM if you want the full download.
