Nope, no tag. Now here is a thought. Oregon now has significantly less hunters than back when ODFW instituted the limited entry tag bull elk and buck mule deer program. I say drop the tag draw system for bull elk and buck mulies except for a few units for those that have to have it. Retain the tag system for cow elk and doe. There was nothing wrong with the open counter system and it let families hunt together and allowed you to do some exploring from year to year. If you live in eastern Oregon and don't draw a bull elk or buck deer tag you are left out in the cold. OK for you westsiders but not for eastsiders. ODFW could regulate the area herds for health by having zone restrictions - spike tags only, or cows only or 3 points plus etc. They already have the zones. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Vic/

Nope, I will take it the way it is. Not perfect, but all in all it works pretty good if you understand the system. Unless you need some info they wont give out like non-res/outfitter tags but thats another subject. You eastsiders can come over and shoot our elk anytime. I like having areas to go with limited entry.

I think the draw system is fair also. The two changes I'd make however are:
1. drop the $4.50 fee per application. The computer system has more than paid for itself by now.

2. Make hunters apply for tags at a POS in the area they wish to hunt. Those that are serious enough to hunt our back yard wont mind the days drive over here to spread some of their Multnomah, Marion and Lane County wealth in our little communities. Those that aren't can hunt the west side like us "eastsiders" than can't draw.

Seems logical. Except for the out of state guys who hunt/apply in multiple states per year.

I always make sure to spend money over there, and do make trips out to scout earlier in the year. Of course if you really think about what the local communities like john day do in business the friday before and opening weekend, a lot of money does come in that maybe wouldnt from locals.

I'm not for giving ODFW more money, simply because I don't think they spend it wisely. That said, I would raise the app fees with the proceeds going to fund: mandatory hunter harvest reporting program and predator management (since they took it out of the hunters hands)

I'm sick of our "hunter dollars" going to fund some $5 million dollar boat ramp somewhere.

I'd tell about my draws but I'm afraid of offending folks. All I know for sure is that I probably spent all my luck on getting the tags with none left for the pursuit....

Oregon needs to go back to paying the tag fees up front, instead of the 4.50 application fee. Oregon used to have good odds for drawing deer and elk tags and at least reasonable odds for antelope and sheep. I really don't believe the preference points really work, and am really disappointed in the direction Oregon has gone with all the raffles and auctions. It's a money game, and we as hunters lose! They want you to buy all the hunting and fishing licenses but not let you go. Example, the spring chinook were late this year, but they did make it up the Columbia about a month later in much bigger numbers than last year. You would think they would open it up and let us catch a few hatchery fish, well my pole is still in the shed and the Native Americans are fishing hard daily and bringing in record numbers. They need to wake up and remember who funds all the programs for wildife and fisheries. We as sportsman need to stand up and voice are concern on what's happening with our states hunting and fishing resources, and if our game herds are bigger and stronger than ever why are we more restricted?

I've looked over all other states preference/bonus point systems and Oregon's is one of the best. I study the point system and use it to its fullest. I like being able to figure on when/where I will draw a tag. It's too bad we don't have herd management like other states. I do agree with fronting the tag fees. It keeps the hunters who are serious in the game and the "weekend warriors" out.

It's a guarantee that the prices will go up---------------it's Oregon!

It'd never happen, but a one year boycott would have ODFW actually listening to us and solving problems.

The greatest impact of the draw system has been crowd control which I fully support. I totally quit elk after my first attempt in the early 70's. It was like being in the Safeway parking lot out there. As to front money, when I was a student it was a tough deal, and we did not apply for the whole ball of wax each year. Now I would support it again, but I do have more expendable income. Not having to front tag fees brought more casual folks into the draw system especially for the impossible to get bighorn tags. With front money, I thought I might indeed get lucky some year. Odds were about 3 or 4 percent. Now I will probably never pull in a tag. With more casual folks putting in for bighorn and such, we see more kids and people showing up for a hunt in sandals and shorts that applied on a whim. Several tag holders quit each year after their first look at the habitat. I would support front money for the once in a life time trophies and suggest we leave the deer and elk alone. Wow, that's amazing!

1minute, Just wondering if you might know the shape of the sheep herd in the North Catlow Rim area? I noticed they cut the numbers of tags this year to just one. Really hoping to draw that area someday for sheep, lots of areas for a big ram to hide. Your comment about casual folks putting in for the highly prized tags really got me thinking about a kid a few years ago who drew a Alvord Peaks tag after the state record was taken. He said he had no time to scout or even look at the area he was hunting in, just wanted to shoot a bighorn. He ended up taking a low 150's which from what I hear was the first ram he located. Also said the area sucks, too many rattlesnakes and way to dry and hot. Wish I could be in such misery!!!!!!

I agree with 1min as well.
Some 30 years ago ( when we had a lot less bighorn opportunies) a young lad and his father appeared at the ODFW pickup manned by my pals Dad. They asked him "where the sheep were?" My friends Dad pointed them to the steep east side of the Steens Mnt range that the kids tag was for. They both announced that they "weren't going down there!" Loaded back up and went home to Portland...!!!
If dear old Dad had to pony up the $$$ before applying, maybe he would have been aware of the logistics of the hunt and bowed out.....then a serious Oregon wanna be sheep hunter could have drawn that tag.
I agree that the "premium sheep and goat" tags should be money up front..... BT53
