Thinking of loading up some Barnes 168 TTSX for an elk hunt. If they'll shoot, any reason to consider anything else?
No. I’ve killed several deer and elk with that bullet in 30-06 and never had issues. The ones I have recovered have been picture perfect. 50yrds to 350yrds.
I use the 165TSX in my 300WSM. Same story as above never an issue with performance near or far.

My brother and I both shot elk this season with a 300 wsm using the Barnes LRX. Did the trick with no complaints.
180gr Scirocco, 180gr Accubond, 180gr Partition, 200gr Partition, 200gr Accubond, 185 Berger VLD, 190gr Berger VLD, Sierra 200gr Gameking all good bullets for elk IME. Hard to pick a bad elk bullet in 30 cal as long as you keep the weight up. The long ones take up some powder space, but that doesn't seem to be a problem in the Short Mag cases, and the long ones fly well.

I’ve killed deer and elk with 168 TTSX out of a .300 Weatherby, 165 TSX .30-06, and 150 TTSX 7mm Weatherby. None took more than a few steps. No reason to mess with others although there are plenty of good options out there. I just stick with what works for me.
Happy Trails
180 gr AB has been devastating out of my 300wsm
180/200 grain Nosler Partition or Swift A-frame would be my choices.

Nope, you can spot right there MikeStatan.

There are lots of others too, but you have one that is as good as any now.

I've killed quite a few elk with ordinary 180gr Speer Hot Cores. They've penetrated very well and I've recovered a couple that hit bones. Those had 75% or better weight retention.
RC: were those Hot Cores from a WSM?

It is hard to best the Barnes bullet no matter the caliber !!!
My Savage in 300 WSM likes the 180 grain Accubond. Good accuracy and it's killed deer, elk and moose. Just my recommendation.

My .300 WSM likes the Barnes 175gr LRX. Has worked great on moose, I’m sure it would work on elk as well.

I found the 175 gr LRX to be more accurate out of my 300 Win Mag versus the 180 gr TSX. Should the 168 not work for your likings, I'd look at that bullet, too.

Same here. I bought a box of 175gr LRX and a box of 180gr of TTSX and every load combination I tried, the LRX was more accurate.

Yes.
Barnes 168 TTSX or their 150 TTSX.

I load the 168 TTSX for my son in laws 300 WSM. He brags on that bullet!

It's no secret I don't like mono's. All the elk, deer and antelope I've taken with the 300 WSM (except 1 elk) were taken with the 180 Partition, and have given the fastest "drops" of any bullet/cartridge combo (with the exception of the 338 WM/210 NP). Hit a bull in the lungs and, coupled with the WSM's speed, the grenade effect of the Partition is fantastic. Love the combo. I've also seen a lot of elk taken with the 180 Accubond from a friend's 300 WM, and it's equally good.
being a heavy bullet guy , I would take 200 gr accubombs

short range trajectory should be pretty much indistinguishable from 180 s and the heavyweight should be superior at distance.......
300 WSM 168 TTSX took this guy down in quick order.

Really no reason to shoot anything other than the 168 TTSX. Great bullet.

That being said, I would certainly buy a box of 175 LRX to see how they shoot.

I would gladly use whichever of those two shot best in my rifle on any elk hunt.
165 TTSX .
I loaded the 168TSX for one friend in his 300 WSM and the other friend who uses a 300WSM likes the Nosler 180 AB factory load for elk. I like the 168TTSX in the 30-06 too. I've shot big Namibian gemsbok with the older 165 xbt from a 300 WinMag...easy peesy. I would be surprised if your rifle did not shoot it well. "To me", its much easier finding a good load in the 300WSM than in any 300 WM I ever loaded for. that may be an anomaly, but its true in my world, ha.
A friend has had great luck with 165 gr Fusions from his on BIG moose and elk.

Personally, I would go 180 gr

I have tried the TTSX, SST, Accubond, Partition and the like... after lots of load work ups over the years, I load a 180gr Speer Hotcore. I can't explain it.... they just shoot better than the rest... Speer Hotcore have taken elk for me from 16 yards to 320. And took a mule deer at 420+ yards this year propelled by some IMR4831

A couple of bulls taken with the 300 WSM/ 180 NP combo:

I load 165-168 gr bonded bullets while the spouse loads 180 gr bonded bullets. Only difference I've seen in bullet performance was the noticeable drop the 180 gr has over my 165 grainers. We both have taken elk, moose, cow bison, antelope and deer with them and no big diff.
