So I have hade this 1927 Savage 99 .300 savage for several years and not t drew blood. I am going to use it for deer this year in PA and KY. And I was thinking what Load would be suitable for Elk? Is the .300 to under powered for Moose ?

Most any 150 gr softpoint will work at .300 Savage velocities. I don’t think you need a premium bullet since no one loads one anyway. Just get close and shoot straight! Happy Trails

The old-school .300SAV has taken most every species in the Western Hemisphere. = NO game animals will care that they were killed by a round from 1920. = The .300 Savage is suitable for any game that can be taken with the .308WCF.

Out to 200M plus, I prefer the FEDERAL 180 grain factory ammo for any animal above 250 pounds, IF I'm using factory rounds. = 2350FPS.
(Actually, I prefer my handloads =. an 180 JSP or GCCB in front of 32 grains of either IMR 3031 or 4064 works FINE in my Model 760.)

I would use the heaviest off the shelf bullet offered in a commercial load. At the 300 Savage speed, I don't believe the name on the head stamp makes a whole lot of difference. They all work if you do your job . Shoot the one most accurate in your rifle

Fwiw, the heaviest common bullet in .300 SAV (and generally for the .308WCF, too) is the 180 grain JSP. = The FEDERAL loading is advertised as SLIGHTLY "hotter" than other usual "off the shelf" brands.

Note: "experts" say that the .300 SAV simply doesn't have the "case volume" to handle the 200-250 grain bullets successfully, that some .30-06 rifles will handle.
(SOME rifles will accurately/safely shoot a 250 grain bullet & those hand-loads are fully equal to the .318 Westley-Richards caliber that is "well-liked" for most "non-dangerous" African game.)

A while back someone posted images from a game record book of a hunting lodge or similar. There were a number of elk in the entries where the cartridge used was the 300 Savage. If you're going to shoot factory then grab a box of those Federal 180's and go to it.

Pretty much your only grain offerings in factory will be 150 and 180.

Either will work, but it’s more of which is more accurate, knowing the cartridge’s distance limitations on elk and shot placement.

BTW...the 300sav is perfect for pa whitetail. I think you will like it for PA if you are woods hunting in the northern & mid-tiers.

I currently shoot the federal Power-Shok 180 gr. Used Remington Core Lokt 180 gr for years, but they discontinued it. Shot my first elk with 150gr. Decided to use the 150gr in case of a longer shot. I have 3 model 99s. One was grandpas, one was his brothers and the other dad bought back in the 70s. Have killed many deer with them. Grandpa lived near Smethport in Pa. He always called the 99 'ole meat in the pot'. I try to take at least one deer with them each year.
