Posted By: GSP1 MT 313 Elk General Season Advice - 09/01/19
Hi all.
I am looking for advice on DIY late rifle season hunting for unit 313. The Jan 2018 survey showed the highest populations in 10 years.

Any general advice would be welcomed.

Some specifics:
• hunt strategies?
• is it possible to get away from the crowds?
• grizzly precautions besides side-arm, pepper spray and food storage?
• . . .

I am all ears. I hunted in NW MT one day about 10 years ago and saw bulls at dusk, but could not get to them.
In my experiences in 313 I hunted in the Gardiner area and the Tom Miner Basin area. I always had good luck in the Tom Miner Basin area. Not so much around Gardiner..
the rest of the times were during a special season for the control of the thousands of Elk migrating from Yellowstone. If the herds are growing, and somehow you get a real heavy snow in the park early, you will have excellent hunting. I am assuming you mean in the Gardiner area. The Tom Miner Basin is known for their Grizzlies. Probably Gardiner also. It is said that a gun shot is like a dinner bell to them.
If there is a late season, you should see Elk! And Buffalo!!

where are you coming from?...….you said general season . than late season ….which one...….bob
Thanks for the note!
BobMt,
Thanks for the note. I am coming from Georgia. I have my hunt unit narrowed down to 313 or 327. I plan to get in a day early (Oct25) to hike back in and spend the day glassing / setting up for opening day (Oct26). I plan to camp out and wake up where I hopefully see a few the night before.
Thick bear country down there, definitely use all the precautions. Hopefully it will be pretty cold by then. Stay out of Beattie Gulch.
