I’m headed out for Elk 3rd rifle early next week. Any 2nd season hunter have success or reports, I’m wondering about buying Bear tag, or has snow put them in ground as well. Much appreciation for any input.
Just about snow everywhere.Bring warm clothes and snow gear for your truck.Thinking elk might have moved down earlier this year. There was 16 " of snow where I wanted to hunt.At 9000 feet I was stuck i my camper for 3 days. Finally said screw it it, packed up and came home.
I am not as tough as I use to be though.
Just got back from 2nd season. Camping at about 9000 as well. Had 4" of snow in camp and 60-70mph wind gusts one night and shredded the rain fly on our wall tent, bent the stove pipe over etc. etc. Grass wasn't matted down and snow wasn't heavy so walking/climbing was pretty good still. Elk were still fairly high and scattered. Got out on Wed. morning and the weather guys were calling for another round Wed night into Thursday. As Saddlesore said be prepared for snow/cold this year unlike the last several years when we were in short sleeves in camp in the afternoons.
I'll call you when I get to Silverthorne on Monday and let you know what I see. The forecast is for 8" to 10" Sunday through Tuesday then no snow scheduled for next 8 days. . But...that could change daily.
I checked the long range forecast, looks like it's going down to single digits at the beginning of the season near Craig. Bring plenty of cloths and good luck!
I saw that. I will be in that area and putting up my tent in single digits. Can't wait. Good luck to all.
4" of fresh snow hear and still snowing 23 F as of 7:10 am
Hope you have a safe trip Ray, I’ll be up on Thursday evening. Have a friend from work that will be DIY south of me for his 1st Elk hunt.
I’m not jealous on your tent work in single digits, but I’d still help you! Please say hello to Tom and Jeanne and good luck.
Wife called her aunt that lives in Craig, they got 10" yesterday and said it had been snowing most of the day. Supposed to get another 4-6" by tomorrow morning. Lows were supposed to be in the single digits. Going to be a cold COLD third season.
I got into Craig last night. The lows are in the negative single digits. My truck lives at sea level in sunny So. Cal. and had a tough time starting up this morning (like its owner).
Going to Craig for the 4th season awesome to hear about the snow! Good luck with your elk hunt!
Need a snow update for the Fairplay area. Got a fourth season rifle elk hunt coming up. Are the elk mid to low range yet?
Thanks

Things are looking very good for 4th season - Rebekah at the Chamber of Commerce (probably the best source for local knowledge) thinks that this will be the best year that Craig has seen in the past 9 years.
Good luck to all third season hunters, I'll be in Craig on Wednesday to hunt the last four days of the season in Hamilton. WAM, get a big one! Be safe all!
Cow elk down at 8:30 am on opening day! DIY, public land. Methinks that Rebekah was right...
Congrats!
