I drew unit 36, early season, muzzleloader. Does any have information on terrain and elevation? I’m going with an outfitter so I’m not looking for your honey hole. Just some things to expect and was wondering the elk size and numbers in general.

Google Earth and/or a DeLorme Atlas will have the answers you seek . . .

Great unit. Got two ten years apart a 350 and 335. Quit trying when NM made it almost impossible for nonrez to draw. My guide lived on the edge of the unit and knew every inch backwards and forwards. Not sure if Jim is still working but a great guy to hunt with.

Good luck on the early season muzzy Hunt.

9000 feet up around Cloudcroft down to about 4500 in the p-j. Steep ridges to rolling, the escarpment overlooking the Tularosa basin and White Sands having some particularly steep fingers coming off of it. Very nice draw.

Md’, sounds like 34?

36 varies from piñon/juniper to mixed conifer. The upper part of the unit is pretty steep in places.

A good part of the unit has burned with quit a bit of dead fall. Depending where your outfitter hunts, I’d start working on the legs.

Should be a great hunt.

If memory serves, Cloudcroft is 34. Up around Ruidoso is 36. Double check me because it's been a while. Should be good hunting either way.

Correct....

It has some pretty steep areas as we were on really good horses. I got maps from New Mexico game dept of the area. We entered just s of Nogal as I recall. Ride in to camp was simple but going up the mountains in the dark of morning was rather treacherous for this flat lander but not what I considered dangerous. Beautiful country and lots of elk.

Enjoy

My bad- you are right, I was thinking of 34. 36 is north of the Mescalero and runs generally a bit higher and, I would say, more rugged. As good a draw, though.
