Looking for an 18 OR 20" AR 10 in 6.5 or 308. Max price 2500.00. Any suggestions on quality and brand that is accurate. Dual purpose for hunting and shtf rifle.

I'd do 6.5 all day every day unless I wanted to run milsurp ball.

Leaning towards 6.5 myself

I have two AR-10t's in 260 and one in 308 but they are not setup the same at all.

The 260 is a 22" heavy monster PRS Stock, Key Lock HG, and a bipod. It is very accurate and has a Zeiss Diavari 3-12x56 with a Illuminated dot reticle on it (No 1or 0 I think it is called). It will accurately do 500 yards too easy but it is a beast.

The 308 is a 16" with a Fiberglass guard and a A2 style stock. Have a Trijicon 2.5-10x56 on top of that one and it shoots 168 SMK's really well but with the triangle point reticle it is different altogether.

The choice really depends on what else you have in the safe. If you have a 6.5 Grendel or a 6.8 SPC for instance with a 16-18 barrel then a longer barreled beast in 308 would make the most sense unless you don't mind hand loading in case 6.5/260 is hard to find.

You have to run the monsters more wet than the normal AR-15s.

Never owned an AR 10. Im a buy once cry once type of guy. I shoot mostly bolt action rifles but a semi auto platform interests me. Looking at DD, Armalite, Stag ect.

AR-15 maybe or shoot one is my advice. The AR-10 is a heavy unit. AR-10s are not interchangeable like the AR-15 Platform either so you want to be sure which style (brand) you go with. I went down the Armalite Paths. My Brother has a Rock River. We have both been happy.

A 6.8 SPC or a 6.5 Grendel might be a good option for you to look at if you are wanting more hammer than a 5.56. There are also WSSM Variant AR-15s

AR-10’s are very heavy. Have you held any? I’d go 6.5 if I bought one.

I made one for myself with a 20" light weight barrel I turned myself from a Green Mountain blank. 308 cal. 1-10 twist. It's a finicky sucker but shoots 180 grain loads under 1 MOA with what it likes. It took me a few weeks of load work to find what it likes however. If I were to find a compact 4X I could knock off about 6 oz, but even then it's not light. It would still be over 10LBS.

It has a 2X-7X Redfield on top and with a 10 round mag full or rounds, scoped, with a sling it weighs 10 pounds 9 oz. That's no featherweight, but unreasonably heavy either. Two of my 270 weight exactly the same. My 300H&H my 404 Jeffery and my M1 Garand are all heavier. But when I want to take any of them out I just take them, and even going up and down the mountains where I hunt I have not found them to be a burden yet.

I wish some of you guys that shoot "moa" AR10's would post those targets in the black rifle challenge. Seems there are not very many AR10 rifles that shoot sub or even a solid moa. Please post those "moa" targets. I'd like to see them...

If SHTF ---- I'd want a .308 ------ lots more .308 ammo out there in the world than 6.5

Facts are terrible things especially when true. No problem at all with the 6.5 or it 's performance ? It's the logistics of the ammo and LOTS of brass AND BULLETS 308 bullets everywhere with less expensive quality brass. Maybe that isn't a problem for you. MB

If you go .308, you better buy ammo when you see it for sale because it's one of the first to be cleared off the shelves.

1 sw performance....any other suggestions.

Armalite AR-10t is my recommendation however my brother really likes the Rock River he has

Will magpul mags function in the Armalite?

Yep.

Good luck finding any significant quantities of .308 Ammo now.

I reload so that isnt too much of a worry for me. Now trying to find a rifle in stock is the issue. Looking hard at Armalite. Price seems ok but can't find 6.5 creed in a 18 or 20 inch configuration.

Yes, they fit the current production AR-10A but not the older AR-10B.

Seekins, in either chambering or a Daniel Defense. Or any of a dozen other decent guns........more or less boils down to a list that is GTG & then what you can find. You really have to hunt hard & move fast when something comes up.

Ammo is THE issue right now, if you don't already have some of either or a schitt-pile of brass & primers.

Thanks buddy, I really like that rifle and yes I do have a good shooting AR10 308w. However, it is only a true 1.6moa rifle..:

Bingo. The op is trying to decide between different brands. Mine is the older (pre 2011) Armalite AR10T. It will only take the proprietary Armalite mags. They are great magazines, but are expensive. The thing I like about my S&W performance center is it takes P mags. The same can be said about the Remington R25 and DMPS panther arms AR308. My old boss has a DPMS and it is a shooting sob, but it is heavy as hell. Probably one of the best shooting ar308 rifles I've personally seen. Mine shoots sub moa 3 shot groups all day long:

But don't count on that type of accuracy over a 10 shot string:

That's where my 6.5 cm really shines:

I'll stand behind the creedmoor as being the better choice. If guys are talking about finding ammo, sometimes its easier to find 6.5cm vs 308w. If you guys are having a hard time finding 6.5cm ammo, you just aren't looking for it.. Whats weird is I was at a country store way out in the middle of nowhere and right next to the 270 and 30-06 ammo was a box of creedmoor. Go figure....

Semi auto 6.5 with less recoil should be a handy rifle for deer and pigs in an 18 " configuration
Posted By: JPro Re: AR 10 6.5 or 308 - 09/08/20
I need to take some new pics, as I've put these up before. Lightweight GII DPMS/Remington AR in .308 with 20" barrel. Weight is 7.6lbs before optics and magazine, so it feels more like a normal sporter-weight hunting rifle. Recoil is very soft for a .308 of that weight, which I attribute to the Supercell pad and the gas operation. My wife and teenager even enjoy shooting it off the bench at steel.

I was also looking at the S&W Performance Center 6.5CM model, but the weight and price were a bit higher than what I was looking for. I'm a fan of both the 6.5CM and the .308Win, but in a 18-20" barrel, I'd rather have the .308 by a slight margin, especially if it's to be a hog-hunting rifle. For a general purpose big game rig, it would be tough to whoop a lightweight 22" 6.5CM GII build with good components if a guy wanted to put something together.

The Walmarts in my AOR seem to have a decent selection of 308 ammo.

Picked up a couple boxes of Win 150gr for $16.47 each last week.
Found some 40rnd boxes of the Federal 150gr 7.62x51 Nato yesterday for $31.50, bought 3.
