Trends usually start when manufacturers introduce a
new (to them, or for now) product. Then promote it.

My guess.
Manufacturers want to sell more guns.

XM177 was an 10.3” or so barrel with a 6” sound moderator. Of course the clones were just a short barrel with a long flash hider welded on to keep it legal. Dumbest thing I ever saw.

Had two clones and they shot well.
Maybe bbl config helped?

May be a bit of spinoff from the popularity of AR pistols.

I saw a brand new Colt reproduction XM177E2 today for $2600. Even had the silver bolt and carrier. The employee told me it was a limited run of 500

It was the first 'shorty' AR that was around and, I suppose, lead to the M4. Fifty years ago it was a fascinating piece and if there is a current interest it likely mirrors the historical interest in the original M-16's and A1's.

We had a few XM177's on hand back in 1984, at the embassy in El Salvador. At the time, it was a handy alternative to the M16A1's we also had.

Glad you guys enjoyed seeing them. It's amazing how much our military gear has evolved since then.
