Hey Guys,
I'm new to this kind of rifle, but my buddy has one for killing hogs on our lease and now I have it in my head I need one as well!! I came across some close out rifles in the Remington Model R-15 but they are chambered in the 30 Remington AR. I like the concept of the short fat round and down range energy but have heard rumblings of it being discontinued. I can get into one of these new, unfired for under $800 but the chamber scares me. I don't want to buy a rifle that I can't find ammo for.

Has anyone had any experience with this rifle/chamber?

Also, does anyone know if this gun's lower can be paired with a new upper later on? Thanks and sorry being so "green" on this type of rifle.

The 30 AR is about the ballistic twin to the 300 Savage and would make a great hog killer. Any AR15 Upper would switch out.

The rifle was announced in 2008 or maybe 2009. Remington still does not offer empty brass. Use your imagination as to why the rifles may be on close out.

someone will make a run of brass, thats almost a given... but in this instance, at that point, you better think about buying a lifetime supply. For some folks thats 500 rounds or less, IMHO I"d be thinking about 5000 rounds.

Yeah, considering I don't reload at the moment, I might need to think about buying a press too huh?

That's reason enough to start reloading your own IMO. I think the round would make a great woods rifle for deer and hogs...maybe even black bear too. Like said already above...get the rifle...buy a truck load of ammo...and you're golden.

Forget about the 30AR and get a 308 R-25. Cabela's has them on sale for $1200 right now. My .02

Just remember the AR10 platform IE R25, is bigger, heavier, bulkier etc... kinda klunky. Doesn't mean I won't eventually build on my lowers but the 10 and 15 feel worlds apart

Unfortunately true, that all comes with the larger cartridge. Bigger, heavier, bulkier are facts.... kinda klunky is only an opinion

Buy a 6.8SPC or a 6.5 Grendel. Light weight and both ammunition and brass are readily available.

My vote is for the 6.8 in a hunting cartridge.

I wouldn't go the 30 AR route. To many really good 6.8 uppers out there right now that are very reasonable in price and you can build a lower for a reasonable price and not go too far past that 30 AR gun you saw.
The 6.8 is pretty well established and ammo and brass is everywhere. You aren't giving up any performance at all in my opinion.
There will also be a 30 cal on the 15 platform that will come along very soon that will be superior to the 30 Remington. I have no doubt about that. There are several I have heard and read about recently that are coming very close.
The AR 10 is way too much gun for me to tote around in the woods for deer and pigs.

if I had to pick in the masses there as the best deer gun in a 15, I'd likely settle on the 6.5 grendel instead of the 6.8.

Still there ain't a hill of beans difference in them really.

And all that being said, the 25 wssm may actually beat the rest in the end deer wise.

I would chose the 300 OSSM over the 30 AR. Dtech makes some nice wildcats on the AR platform too.

The real cost savings with reloading come when you buy a funky chambering. I have a 7mm and 300 SAUM that have only had handloads. If I have to buy ammo at $40-50 a box, I would never have bought them. Think of the reloading kit purchase as skipping a gun purchase for the ability to shoot a lot more.

I'd say 243 WSSM and load Berger VLD's.
