is it practical to get an upper in this cal and are there mags that will work with this cartridge in the AR rifle?
where could I look?
Brownell's used to carry them I don't know if they still do.

I'm not sure on the quality but have heard model 1 sales is a place to look also. Thats overheard conversations at matches.
Am not sure there is a match grade barrel made in that caliber, or for that matter even needed. The surplus ammo isn't super like most FMJ so a functionally decent upper should suffice for most.

A google search said DPMS and Olympic Arms made them but a quick once over of their websites didn't turn up any evidence of such. Maybe call them. Neither website is very user friendly.
Lapua makes brass for this round. That always made me chuckle, but it should be good brass.
not a good cartridge choice for the AR. Feeding will be an issue as you will notice all 7.62x39 mags are curved, the straight portion required to seat the mag in the mag well of an AR is the problem. That is why you don't find many of them around.
I'v read the same, that the mags and feeding problems are a PITA!
Lets see now. I'm not the most brilliant. Know a ton on 223 AR service rifles but past that I'm not the most intelligent.
BUT isn't the 7.62 case the parent case of the PPC rounds? If thats the case I've tinkered a bit with feed lips making 6PPC and 6.5PPC(more correctly 6.5 Grendel) rounds feed in 20 round mags. No big deal. Gotta tweak and test but that was easy enough.
Granted thats not the full 7.62x39 but if you can get PPC rounds feeding I suspect its nothing more than some work to get the SKS rounds to feed. Could be wrong though. Ask my wife.....
Jeff
I have a colt h-bar 7.62 upper on a vulcan lower...shoots great...feeds great even using 223 mags...don't overload the mags...they won't hold 30. it's a fun cartridge and legal for deer where the 223 is not in some states. go for it
the PPC cases are based on the .220 Russian if I remember correctly.
7.62x39 was basis for 220 Russian which was basis of the various PPC rounds. That should cover it start to finish basically(where did the 7.62 round come from ??)
yep and so is the 7.62x39 case
