I don't know much about them ..... Still reading and learning .... ? Is I found a new in box dpms black panther 223 for 600 dollars .... Should I save for something better or start off here..... Thankyou for your replies....
I personally would save a bit more. Most people say they want a gun for plinking, hunting, self defense etc. A plinking gun in my opinion would not be a suitable or worthwhile Self Defense gun, so spend a few bucks more. Colt, SW, RRA etc etc.
Take a look at Palmetto State Armory....it is not that hard to get the parts and put a pretty nice one together yourself for $500 or so....
Rock River or Stag

For a first AR-15 the Panther for $600 is probably not a bad choice at all. Buy it, spend a little time with it and decide if you even like the platform. For the casual shooter the DPMS should be a fine choice.

Sure, you can get a better rifle but it'll cost a lot more.
Rock Rivers are hard to beat for out of the box reliability & accuracy. But I wouldn't have a problem buying a Colt, Stag Arms, DPMS, or Bushmaster. My favorite is my Les Baer, but then at $2K, there are a lot of other really nice AR's such as Noveski, Laru Tactical, Daniel Defense, and several other high end models.
One of my cheapest AR-15's that I really like is my S&W M&P. Great gun for the money.

I also noticed the other day that CDNN Sprorts has their MagPul Colt AR-15's on sale for $949. Which sounds like a really good price to me.

Thankyou everybody for your honest replies
PSA Upper with SS FN barrel--$330 (and a cheap red dot)
http://palmettostatearmory.com/inde...fire-without-bcg-or-charging-handle.html

PSA also has lowers for $50, BCGs for $90, lower build kits for $120.

I'd put that stuff together. Then I'd add an H2 buffer, and buffer / bolt springs from Springco.

For less than $700 you'd have a really, really solid AR that could be upgraded it a really, really great AR depending on your personal preferences.
Thankyou bluedreaux
Here is what I did:

Scored a Sig M400 for $775 and will be taking advantage of a $100 rebate that Sig is offering. Have seen this model going for several hundred more. I am not associated with the gun shop, only a satisfied customer. No tax here so for $675, I had to get it.

Selway always has some awesome deals. I am a satisfied customer as well.

I don't see the $100 rebate. But nonetheless, that is a good deal as well. I have heard nothing of Sig's basic M4 model. I have only read a bit here and there about there piston driven systems and exotics. Anyone know how this is reviewed. Reliability and ruggedness being my chief concern from a basic platform like this.
On-line reviews say 2 inch accuracy with most ammo, no frills, and a base line carbine.

Looks to me like Selway has an inventory to move, and has adjusted the price accordingly.

The furniture is base line quality, and the Magpul rear sight is functional. It's a decent deal for a plinker/shooter or a base model for customizing if you have to have a Sig.
That's a good price, based on my "opinion" I would take a stag, RRA, Colt, DD or even a Windham arms personally.
I prefer Colt AR15s.
Here's another crazy PSA deal.

$370 for a 16" upper WITH BCG and charging handle.

For anyone else who is looking, Grabagun has the Colt 6920 MOE in FDE for $879 plus $6 shipping. Heck of a "starter" gun that you won't ever outgrow, although you certainly might modify -- just don't have to.
I picked up a Rock River arms Lar 15 for $900 at Scheels in Reno, I shot one group that measured .316 and several groups under 3/4 of an inch with handloads.
The Rock Rivers are known to shoot, that's for sure.

Palmetto State Armory does indeed run some deals. A guy can put together a heck of a carbine for $600-700.
Glad I saw this thread, I am thinking about getting an AR as well and am new to the game when it comes to these rifles.

Someone is selling a RR LAR-8 308 in the classifieds for $1300 shipped, is that a good deal?
Right now is the time to get into an AR-15, prices are falling everyday.
Picking up some stripped lowers today, but total rifle prices are good too.
