I just built my first AR and I went with a 300 Blackout upper. I do not reload, so I'll be using factory ammo. Looking at ammo, I'm a little confused. The bullets are all over the place, 110gr., 120gr., 150gr., 220gr., etc. If I'm using it on deer, what should I be using? If using it on pigs, what should I be using? I know that 110gr. are super sonic and the heavier ones, 220gr., are subsonic. What's the advantage of one or the other?

I took it to the range last weekend and was using Barnes 110gr. TTSX. It shot great and had it on in less than 10 rounds.

This is what it is:
Anderson lower
Timney 3 lbs. trigger
Rock River lower parts kit
Radical Firearms 300AAC complete upper with 16" 8-1 twist with Radical Hybrid rail.
BCM Mil-spec buffer tube 2.9oz. buffer
Magpul CTR buttstock
Leupold Mark2 integrated mounting system
Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 rifle scope

I just built a 8.3" 300 Blk. It's running well so far, digesting both subs and supers just fine. I've got a little more tweaking to do with my buffers and SLR gas block to get it tuned the way I want it, but it's real close.

I shot some Rem Hog Hammers and some Rem 220gr subs this past weekend (because that's all I can find local) and both did well at the short range I was shooting. More testing to come.

As to deer boolits, if the Barnes will expand they'll be great. I'm fairly confident that the Tac-TX will work well, as well as the Hog Hammers. The Hornady V-max seem to hold together fairly well also, being that the BO is a low velocity round.

The black tip Barnes are the way to go. They're designed for the BO and expand much lower than most.

The Barnes 110 TTSX should be fine on deer & pigs, at supersonic speeds. I think the 125gr Ballistic tip is a little better as far as reliable expansion, but I'm not sure if anyone is factory loading it.

The subsonic loads are primarily for suppressed use. Although even without a can they would be less blasty inside a house.

Yea, that's what I had, the black tips.

The Black Tip is the Tac-TX if I'm not mistaken. Ordering some today.

You may be referring to the standard 110 TTSX with the blue tip. The black tip is also 110gr, but is a different bullet that definitely expands better than the 125gr BT (which is also a great bullet for this application).

To the OP - the light weight 110-125gr loads are full power rifle rounds; the 220gr stuff is subsonic and carries about half the power or less, with relatively poor performance on game. The only reason to use the 150gr loads is just for lower cost plinking, they aren't really ideal for any hunting use.

i used the black tip barnes on a deer last year worked fine. i also use the hornady 110 vmax for my pest killing needs

Black tip Barnes in either the 110gr or 120gr varieties.

I just ordered a case of Remington 120gr. OTFB for plinking. $14.00 per box off of Cheaper than Dirt. They're the cheapest I could find. The Barnes were about $32.00. When I get to actually use it to kill something, I'll switch back to the Barnes.

Thanks for your input, it sheds a lot of light on it for me.

PS that said only super I've shot was barnes bullets, 115 tac X? I think...it did work fine on a pig.

I run S&B 125 FMJ for plinking, HSM 125 SP for range practice and hunt with handloaded 125 Nosler BT.

Nice looking rifle, Brian. Ya oughta bring that one to next year's pig killing.
