Anybody had their hands on one of these? I'm not big on the camo setup, but the overall package looks like a well thought-out rifle for deer/hog hunting. 7.6 lbs, stainless 20" barrel, carbon-fiber forend with rail attachment points, and an overall length that's the same as a 20" Model Seven. They are priced at $1,250 or so. Can something better be built for less?

R-25 GII

Rock River is about the same. It uses FAL magazines. Accurate

I am a big RRA fan but they don't have anything in 308 that is this light and certainly nothing with a 20" barrel. I think the gun looks sweet. I just don't know why they can't offer other calibers than 308, how abut 243 and 6 and 6.5 creed.

I think it would be a fine hunting rifle. However, many people with GII's have reported damaged brass and other issues related to the rifles being over gassed. I think with some tweaking you could get one to run right but DPMS spent all that time engineering a new design and completely neglected the most important factor, reliability. You cannot take weight away from the operating system without modifying the gas port location and size on the barrel. They still use 16" cabine gas barrels and 18" midlength gas barrels which promote early unlocking (extraction while chamber pressures are still high). This leads to cycling issues, broken parts, and damaged brass. All of which many GII owners have experienced.

Sorry, rant over. I'd like for someone to give me a GII and see if I could make it work. I think cutting the 20" barrel back to 16"-18", adding a fully adjuatabe gas block, and adding weight to the bolt carrier, I bet you could make one run pretty reliable.

At 7.6 lbs, there's some wiggle room.

I've got one of these in the Predator HP version. It is very accurate and reliable with the poly FAL mags. It is a beast though. This was my first AR and I hunted with it for a couple years. Killed several hogs with it. Not until I finally broke down and build an AR15 did I realize just how massive it was. It stays in the safe now.

With the appropriate bullet I can't think of anything a standard AR15 in 6.8 can't do that a larger platform 308 can do any better, at least for me.

I had a G2 Hunter from DPMS which is the same thing, wish it had worked well.

This 20-inch barrel is fluted to further cut weight. Combined with the use of aluminum in the receivers and nylon in the stock, the R-25 weighs 8.75 pounds-still not a lightweight by hunting rifle standards, but considerably lighter than many other LR308- or AR-10-style rifles.

8.75 pounds plus maybe 1.5 pounds for a scope/mount plus 8 ounces for every 10 shells in the gun, do you want to put a sling on it? Then you have an 11.5 pound "hunting rifle" to gain 5 more shots than a browning MK3 BAR that with the same accessories comes in at 8.5 pounds. If you actually plan to hunt the gun, to what advantage is it other than its an AR?

Good ideas on paper fade fast sometimes in real use.

S-L-O-W-L-Y building my own .308 on Aero upper and lower. May finish it sometime this year. Weight is a concern but I doubt I'll ever be able to keep the weight low enough that it will be much of a prolonged-carry rifle. My Ruger .308 Scout with the synthetic stock supposedly comes in at 6.25 pounds sans scope and fills that bill.

Barrel and handguard options are welcome.
