Dreaming up an AR based hunting / truck gun. Thinking the following goals:

-most likely .223 but may consider .300 Blackout
-1/7 or 1/8
-Dedicated suppressed
-under 9 pounds scoped
-as short as a standard 20" barrel AR or shorter with 16" being better yet
-well balanced for offhand shooting
-300 yard plus effective range
-MOA accuracy or better for three shots

Should I go piston? What upper works well suppressed? SBR or integrally suppressed?

Up until your requirement of MOA, I was thinking get a Ruger Mini 30.

That's an idea haven't considered. I may have to check into that.

I'm confused by the criteria. You want a 16" barrel but are considering SBR?

I'd build a pistol and slap the can on it.

I want a dedicated suppressed rifle. With can, an SBR will can be the length of a standard 16". Some integral setups could achieve without two stamps

And the shorter barrel pretty much does away with any benefits of the suppressor.

I've shot both. A 16" suppressed rifle sounds like suppressed rifle.

An SBR that suppressed sounds like a 16" unsuppressed. Or not far from it.

Be sure to include an adjustable gas block if running suppressed.

Got the Gemtech integra upper. Pricey but it is set up for suppressed including gassing, 16.1" including integral suppressor and 131 dB with the equivalent of a 10.5" barrel.

Once it gets out of jail, I will have a truck gun!

Sounds fun. Congrats.

I'm excited. Something I can pull out of truck and shoot a coyote or hog with and not mess up my ears any worse than they are.

Few things better.

I love suppressors.

Congrats. Have fun!

Gemtech makes good stuff.

Knew that was coming. As soon as you include integral and suppressed in the same sentence, the 3rd word magically appears.

On another note:

Hopefully ATF will finally work through June/July 2016 applications. That's what is gumming up the works right now on the cans. After that, everything should flow along pretty good. I've been told by Silencershop not to expect my stuff from that period until possibly next May.

Me too. My 30-cal suppressor works well, but at 20 plus ounces, makes most guns too barrel heavy. I have a lighter weight Thunder Beast Ultra 7 in NFA jail also. I think I am going to chop the barrels and thread the muzzles of several of my hunting rifles just for the Beast. I am thinking going 20" on one of my .300 Weatherby barrels. It will be interesting to see innovation in suppressors over the next few years. My hope is for shorter, lighter, better-balanced suppressed rifles with sound reduction taking magnums well below 140 dB.

I have a Hybrid waiting from that same time period and hadn't heard the delay might be that bad.....hopefully they're wrong because that would be a total bummer!!

I hear ya. But, them's the facts. I have 2 Dead Air Masks, a Hybrid, and an Omega sitting in NFA purgatory. I'm not buying any more cans until I get some of these freed up.

Technology is advancing... while we wait.

Was that due to the rush before trusts were treated the same as individuals?
Posted By: local_dirt Re: Truck Gun - 08/06/17
Have no idea. They said it is due to all of the applications turned in June-July-Aug last year, and that once that logjam is cleared things should go quickly..
Posted By: TWR Re: Truck Gun - 08/06/17
I just remember everyone was trying to beat the deadline before the rules changed but I don't remember the timeline.

July 13th, a day which will live in pig ears Obammy infamy.

Just a question...
Are you not required to store, secure or safe a suppressor?
So if your truck breaks down on the side of the road and you have to leave it ...
See where I'm going?

Yes - the surge before, and at, the deadline was pretty huge - at least in this area. I know of three LGS that were selling anything that came in, and at asking price.

Much like the last AR scare, a number of folks around here were buying one on the "just because" theory.

Ring - I think you are facing the same issue with leaving a firearm unattended in a vehicle, unless it's a really weird situation, most gun owners aren't going to leave a firearm behind either.

Unscrew the can, and take it with you...or just take the whole gun.

I'm not leaving my cans anywhere my other can isn't. grin
