Doing my first call rifle build chambered for 223 Wylde. Wondering what you guys would recommend for a barrel ie brand length twist rate and handguard? Thanks

Call rifle? As in calling coyotes?
Posted By: Bladerunner140 Re: Call rifle build - 12/12/17
Yes calling coyotes

To me calling coyotes means calling them to me, not trying to snipe them a half a mile away. It also means walking from stand to stand so I like a light rifle. I do know a few contest hunters that need to kill them at every range and condition so bear this in mind.

I have 2 AR's that are what I consider perfect calling guns. Both are 16" SS barrels, one is a 1/8 and the other is a 1/7 twist. Both are considered light weight but my Noveske barrel is more of a medium profile. The other is a LaRue PredatAR. 1/8 is as slow as I'll go anymore even though I shoot more 55 gr bullets than anything else.

I like 13" hand guards and have a Troy Alpha on the Noveske and a BCM Keymod on the LaRue.

The LaRue wears a Leupold VX6 1-6 with the SPR reticle and is more for tighter cover but will work as far as I can shoot. The LaRue has an SWFA 3-9 HD scope and works fine up close but shines at longer distances.

Others like 20 and 24" barrels barely turned with giant scopes and that's alright too.

Thank you pretty new to this game so all the information I can get will be greatly appreciated

What distances do you expect to shoot and how much walking? A 1x6-8 with a good reticle can take you to distance and shine up close. Precision and weight sometimes go together. One exception may be a Noveske rogue hunter or similar profile barrel. You can also save some weight by going 16”as others have stated.

16 or 18" will be fine & are much more portable & lighter than longer barreled rigs.

Good barrels can be made in light(er) contours & shoot just fine; barrel is the most important part in the accuracy equation in building the gun so don't go too cheap.

Unfortunately, you missed a lot of good prices at the end of last month; maybe there will be some more coming up before Christmas or near year end.

Avonac I would expect that most shots would be within 250 to 300 yards . As far as walking I guess I don’t really know but probably some. I have a cabela’s euro 3-9 with duplex reticle hope that it will work.

MontanaMan I’ve been contemplating an 18 inch. Thanks

18" with 7 or 8 twist.

You'll want to shoot 55-60gr VMax bullet. They are death on coyotes.

Thanks pick up 500 55 grain VMAX now have to get my rifle built so I can work up some loads any good recipes?

Nice. What stock is that?
Posted By: MontanaMan Re: Call rifle build - 12/13/17
Here's a pic of a fairly recent build with an 18" SPR fluted White Oak barrel

SLR rail, Viltor MUR upper, Aero lower, Magpul STR stock, Nightforce 3-10x scope in American Defense mount.

26.5 - 27gr (whatever your cases will hold) of Varget.
Don't worry about the crunch.

With that bullet, 25.5 gr of H4895; 25 gr of 8208 XBR.

I'd also go with a 1-8" twist; it will shoot the 55's - 80 gr well.

That's an LMT SOPMOD stock. B5 sells a similar version for half the money.

18" barrel is the best compromise in my opinion.

For a scope we need your budget as it is a very wide spectrum.

MM is that an Aero rail?
Posted By: jimmyp Re: Call rifle build - 12/13/17
I like my new Trijicon accupower 1-8, I also have the VX6 1-6 which is much lighter, of the 2 the 1-8 is better.

SLR...............Ion Lite model, 13.7" Nicest rail available IMO, but pretty pricey at around a normal price of $250. Usually about 20-25% off when they have a sale.

I am going to go with the 18 inch match barrel from White Oak. Any suggestions on which gas system length rifle or mid length ?
Posted By: DakotaDeer Re: Call rifle build - 12/14/17
mid
Posted By: MontanaMan Re: Call rifle build - 12/14/17
Mid, both WOA & Compass Lake Engineering advised me to use a mid-length system & I did, but I also used an adjustable gas block..............that is the setup on the rifle I posted a pic of above. No issue at all. Spikes T2 buffer, Sprinco standard (white) spring.

OK thanks just ordered the barrel from White Oak 18 inch mid length gas system. Now just need to get my upper and rail. Leaning toward and aero upper not sure yet on rail
Posted By: MontanaMan Re: Call rifle build - 12/15/17
I would surely buy almost any upper before an Aero, don't like their rails either....................JMO

American Defense are usually reasonably priced & seem good on what I've used. BCM is also top shelf as well & are fitted to be very snug on the barrel extension fit...........usually have to heat the upper to get it to slide in easily; this is a good thing for accuracy, IMO.

I just did a build using a V-seven matched upper & lower & their stuff is excellent.

Viltor MUR is also very good, a little heavier wall (stiffer) but also more money.

Many say it just doesn't matter so take your choice, pay your money.
