First time positing in this forum.

I know almost nothing about AR's and even less about the scope options. I am more versed in your standard bolt action setups. So I have a buddy who bought a LaRue but can't decide on what type of scope.

He says maybe out to 100m but we all know stretching past can be fun. He thought ACOG type but wasn't sure. Thinks he wants a little magnification.... Are there pitfalls and regrets when buying something like a standard 2-7x32 for these - or maybe a refllex scope you thought you would love but ended up going a different router?

Who here has run the gamut and settled on something -and would care to explain why?

Spare no expense, go with a nightforce NXS 2.5-10×32...

I just bought an SWFA 1-4X24 SS a couple months ago, so far it seems to be a good scope. My only complaint would be a lack of zero-stop, but so far a non-issue.

I also have a Burris MTAC 1-4X24, this one does not have external turrets, the SWFA does. It has been solid so far and has held up to a .458 SOCOM.

I have another AR built around the SPR concept, it has an SWFA 3-15X42, and this scope has worked very well out to 400 or so yards, using a MK262-type load, I haven't had much chance to go further.

I have been exceptionally busy at work for a little over a year, but after the 24th I'll have more time. Working with and finding out about Superchickens and the Nightforce I have bought will priority #1.

I've been very happy with the SS 10X on their SSALT mount.

The SS 1-4 is nice too in a smaller package. Brother is happy with his out to 600.

Sounds like he's a casual user & that he's not into long range precision shooting, so anything that fits his budget from any of the major manufacturers should be fine.

For yardages up to 400 yards & less, a 1-4x or a 1-6x is a good compromise between the long side of the range & stuff at less than 100 yards.

Tons of good choices from multiple sources to fill that niche with lots of reticle choices, either illuminated or not as he wants.

Funny you mention that as that is what Dad did. Works ok but seems a little out of place on an AR to me. I have yet to really warm to the platform though and just can't get comfy with that scope on one. Sacrilege on this forum I know.

Is the M-223 mounted far enough forward? Most of these scopes have to be mounted with the eyepiece about even with the case deflector.

It's a decent little scope. 1/4MOA clicks which you don't find on most of the compacts, the dot is fat enough to see in most conditions, plus I believe you can get an illuminated model for a few $$ more.

On a general purpose AR I prefer to have true 1x illuminated reticle w/ ability to add magnification. I use Trijicon accupoint 1x4 which has both fo and tritium illumination w/ the green triangle post. On 1x it is bright and fast and on 4x allows pretty good target ID to 400 yards. It is pretty handy for coyotes too. There are units available now of equal quality and more magnification and more useful reticles. A variable w/ true 1x is ideal for a general purpose AR IMO.
