I've been using CCI-400 primers exclusively without incident for several years in three Colt ARs. It appears that the Remington 7 1/2 may be a better, safer primer because it has a thicker cup. Any comments?

Been using CCI myself for a lot of years. CCI is said to have harder primers when compared to others.

400's are my preference in a goodly herd of Krunchentickers,in multiple chamberings/blueprint.

7 1/2 are definitely harder and hold pressure better than 400s. Especially if you're trying to get the last 50fps.

400 consistency ES/SD is where it's at.

As long as its not the new WWSR or federal its good enough.

Best consistency can vary from load to load, powder to powder etc... 450s and M41s and BR4s have done so bad over the years they have only won matches for folks. Rem 7.5s are ok also though I rarely found as good an accuracy as with others.

So I'll stick with what has given results for us.

And don't get overly carried away with ES/SD. It has to be good to reach distances, though I don't shoot 223 past the 1000 yard line, but some of the very smallest ES and SD have not been the most accurate loads.

The best way is to look at ES/SD, but pay more attention to how the groups are, and what the vertical is at the max distance you want to shoot. That will tell you a lot more than what a number on a screen every will be able to tell you.

For safety though, just stay off the first two I mentioned and you will be fine.

Thanks for the input; I see no reason to switch from the CCI-400s I've been using.

400's are great for stick powders.
I generally use 450's for ball powder. It can made a good bit of difference in group sizes.

Why in the fhuqk,would someone be gunning stick powders,in said chamberings?!?................

Has the WSR changed recently?

I have been using the WSR in my 25-45 Sharps and 223 loads recently after reading that the CCI 400 were not recommended for the MSR platforms. Of course that was after shooting about 500 of them first in my 223.

I only use CCI 450 in MY Grendels as I dont shoot the number of reloads through them as I do the 223.

Some bullets are finicky....to date, the only thing I've found the 64gr Nosler solid base will shoot at an inch for 5 shots is with IMR-4895. The 60gr Partitions like it better than ball powder as well.

400's will reliably ignite 40grs+of Re-17,in formed 260AI Alpha cases.

It changed years ago, from a silver outer cup to a brass colored one. The brass ones are softer, like the federals. When you are on the firing lines and see untold numbers of shooters with ARs you learn a few things, your world opens up. Only slam fires I've ever seen were new brass colored WWSR and Federal primers in the AR15 platform. Nothing against either primer, but soft is not, IMHO, safe in a floating pin gun like the AR.

That said testing primers can show you a lot with different powders and loads. Opened my eyes MANY years ago. Yep, I have favorites, but I never discount running through primers as an accuracy test, with the ARs I would usually not do this up close but on the mid range lines past 300 out to 600, and plot groups, it can sure sway you now and then. You cannot discount where the holes are in the paper.

Yeah, silly Texan only beat David Tubb at 1,000 with a .223 AR while David was shooting a Tubb gun.

What have you done?

LMAO, kind of, but to be precise it was 600 and it was a service rifle AR in 223, vs Davids Tube gun in 6 XC IIRC. Though it was the ranges first 200 score at 600 ever.

I kind of had issues at 1000 with seeing well enough with stock irons to hold elevation that next day.. I won the Palma service division, but came in 3rd in overall IIRC, though I won 800 and 900 IIRC, 1000 I just could not hold elevation.

But it was fun. David is a great guy too. As was his father.

Never tried the Remington 7-1/2s.
Bought the CCI 450s and never looked back.

I have used the Rem 71/2 exclusively for years in all my AR loads, in the last year or so I have switched some of my rifles to the somewhat new Federal AR match primer the GM205MAR. I have had excellent results with them and they definitely have a harder cup than the standard 205's

CCI-400 and 450's for me, never tried the Rem's.

Pass the 400's and hold the Fluff.

It would be awesome if someone would come out with an updated list on primers, this list is at least 30 years old. FED200's have been a pistol primer instead of rifle primers since 1988, would be good to know the dimensions of the 205MAR. As rost495 said the WSR got softer when they changed from silver to brass color. I'm sure there are several other changes since then also.
