So far I have tried Tac (not impressed), 2520 (promising) and RL 15 (best groups so far).

What powder gives you your best accuracy with the Hornady 75 bthp? Thinking I need to try 8208 and Leverevolution...
Personally, I'd start with BL-C2.

I've had nothing but great groups out of it behind any HP bullets I've used in the 5.56.
My goto stick powder for heavies is IMR-4895. It hasn't failed me yet in this regard.

AR comp and CFE223 look promising.

If I wanted temp stability, I'd drop down to H322. It's a fine grain powder, meters nice, and is part of the Hodgdon's extreme line, and has won more than it's fair share of benchrest matches.

Imr-8208's another consistant performer for me.

H4895
AR-Comp & 8208; if I want to go slow(er), Varget usually gets good accuracy.

MM
My favorites are:
H4895
Varget
8208 XBR
RL-15

TAC didn't match the accuracy of the above. I wish it had since it meters so well.

There is a rumor going around that Hodgdon LEVERRevolution is where it's at.
8208 XBR works well for me.
CFE works great pretty dirty though, if same loads used in bolts, use LeverRevolution, same burn rate, not as dirty
I have loaded some 77 grainers with Varget. They are still unfired. I would like to try some 75's with H4895.

+1
Tac worked really good for us with 77s.

75s are were not that accurate when pushed hard years ago, FWIW.

RL15 worked good.

4895s got to pressure before speed every time we tried it, but can't actually recall if we tried heavier than 73 before I said never again.
Varget
8208 has given me the best accuracy. Same load for 75 HPBT and 77 TMK.

PP2000MR gives slightly faster velocities, and meters perfectly, but accuracy drops a little.

Varget and H4895 did not work out nearly as good as 8208.

CFE223 showed promise, but it hit pressure signs extremely quick.
Varget, RL15, AR comp,
I'm using Ramshot X-Terminator with good result with the 77g Scenar.
Been liking Lever under 75BTHPs and 77TMKs for the past year.
@TheKid

Load data?
Anyone have Quickload numbers for Lever?
I've got Varget, IMR 4895 and IMR 3031 on the bench so those are the ones I'd start with.
I asked Stick about using Lever and he told me where to start. I worked up from 24 grains to 25.5 and stopped there because accuracy was good and I didn’t feel the need to push it further. Cases look good for whatever that’s worth, rounded primers and no sooty necks. I generally don’t reload brass out of my AR, I mostly shoot critters and don’t bother looking in the grass for empties.

So far the 25.5 load under both 75BTHP and 77TMK has accounted for two bucks and around a dozen pigs since November.
While looking for information about using this powder for 55 grain bullets in the 556,i found some posts that Stick made years ago.

They were using it for the heavy bullets but i can't remember where it was.
Does anyone care what FugStick does with it? I don't.

While you may not care and some don’t like his presentation, the dude shoots, a bunch. I’ve never seen him steer anyone wrong when it comes to loading info. Some of us like to go shoot and kill stuff and some guys like to follow a guy around on the net and talk schit. He’s helped me with every question I’ve asked and I can leave it at that.
He's more willing to help a guy than cuss him but sometimes he's left no choice.

I've asked him questions and he's always helped.

While you are mostly right, there is a problem with Lever for 75gr 223 making ARs overgassed. It does work well if the rifle is tuned for it, but a 5.56 AR tuned correctly for Lever won't cycle with a lot of other powders like 8208, Varget, etc. The same rifle tuned for those powders will shoot but is severely overgassed with a full load of Lever; in my experience enough to cause severe case head swipes and early unlocking, along with extra wear and tear on the rifle's operating system. If you don't reload that brass maybe you aren't noticing those issues.

FWIW I do use Lever in a handful of different AR cartridges and am not arguing against using it, but pointing out an issue that is ignored by certain people.

Very interesting.

Do you think LVR is more pregressive burning, having higher pressure down the tube than conventional powder?

Any thoughts on what's going on there?

Well he has argued with what we have used to WIN matches... He is about a mouthy little worthless itch in my books.

I won't argue his knowledge and what works for him, but thinking its the very best because he does it that way, well I guess it is what it is but there are other ways out there.

Of course I always thought one could share info without being an itch. He proves that wrong regularly.

Sorry Tyrone, it's not listed in Quickload.
Here's a guy that's a lot less condescending than Fug Stick.
You don't even have to punch this guy in the nose to get some common respect out of him.

As you'll see in this vid, Lever's velocity is fine, it's accuracy is OK, but none of it really stands out. I would not choose it for competition.
I settled on 25.5 Lever under a 75 BTHP in LC brass and Rem 6-1/2 primers.

3/4” to 1” groups and that works for me. I’m not going to be shooting ground squirrels with that load.
I went with Lever not due any inherent magic but due to availability. Places to buy powder are scarce in my area but the few places usually have Lever. CFE didn’t give satisfactory results under 75s in my rifles and it’s about the only other commonly available powder that is suitable.
I then started a thread here and got advice from Stick and others and went from there.
I’m not shooting any competition, mostly shooting rocks, Plates, deer, and pigs with 75s and 77s. It works and works well for that.

DF

Yes, that's a good way to put it DF.

My best understanding of it is that they were able to make a slow burn rate powder denser, so that you can get enough in the case to boost velocity higher. Doing that results in spreading out the pressure curve longer (we can get more velocity with the same peak pressure if that peak is more like a gentle curve than a sharp spike). In turn, that results in higher pressure at the gas port, which functionally translates as "Lever produces more gas" and makes an AR cycle harder and faster than other common powders for the same application. If you add a suppressor in the mix, as more and more of us are doing these days, the problem gets even worse.

In a bolt or lever action the overgassed condition doesn't matter at all of course even if it's used with a suppressor, other than being a little louder.

I do have a couple favorite loads in other cartridges that use Lever because nothing else is as good. 129gr ABLR in my 6.5 Grendel is one example, and the 40gr V-Max in 20 Tactical is another; both of those give the highest velocity and the best accuracy with Lever at max loads. In the 20 Tactical, I have the rifle's gas adjusted for that one load; no need to use anything else. In the Grendel though, I do use other loads like a 123 ELD and 8208 XBR; at the same gas settings the 129 ABLR/Lever load is seriously overgassed and ruins brass. I solved it with a Bootleg adjustable bolt carrier in that gun; it'd be a good solution for using the 75gr 223 load as well but I haven't got around to buying another yet.

I'll have to look it up tonight and get back to you. Pretty close to a full case, but could still be loaded on a progressive without spilling.

Edit - forgot I had it in my chrono data here - 29.0gr.

LC17 brass
40gr V-Max @ 2.255"
Lever 29.0gr
3917 fps at the muzzle

That shoots better than any other load I've found in that rifle, but I could not find any published Lever data and worked up to it myself. Use at your own risk of course.
Would/should that be safe with a 40 grain 223?

Dave,

You couldn't put enough Lever behind a 40gr bullet in a .223 case to cause any problems.

Look at something similar of similar burn rate like CFE-223.

You are not going to get 32 grains of lever in a .223 case....

8208 is unobtainium so I may end up trying Lever next with the heavies. An adjustable gas block should address any potential gassing issues.

If 8208 ever hits shelves again I will definitely pick up a jug.

I think you are probably right, but I wouldn't make that assumption about Lever just based on Quickload. It might work well under a 40gr 223, but you may run out of powder room a little below max.
I'd have to check this evening, but since 29.0gr of Lever fit in my 20 Tac cases easily, I think a normal 223 case should fit at least 31gr, don't know about 32.

If you want to use a different powder for 40gr 223, forget CFE223, Ramshot XTerminator is where it's at. When I was shooting a lot of the 40gr V-Max and BT, XTerminator gave the best accuracy and velocity in that old Rem 788. As a point of fact, best accuracy with all of the bullets I used in that range happened close to max loads.
Also - use the Western Powders load guide for that stuff.

That makes sense.

Also, in lieu of 8208 try Benchmark. It's a very slightly different burn rate but very close, and gives excellent accuracy in mine with the 75gr BTHP. I use 23.5gr of Benchmark and WSR or S&B SR primers for 2680 fps from a 16"; you can push it hotter but that is the accuracy node that seems to work across a few different rifles.
AR-Comp is also very close to 8208.

I followed up on this today. As dropped from my RCBS powder dispenser, my sized LC brass holds 31-31.5gr of Lever, full to the top of the case neck. With a little tapping to settle the powder, 31gr is about halfway up the neck, and 32gr fits without overflowing. However, it's still too slow/bulky for best results with a 40gr bullet.

I tested it with the 40gr and 50gr V-max today in my 16" 223 Wylde, working up to 31.0gr of Lever under both. The 50gr Vmax averaged 3445 fps, which was similar to the 3415 fps that my standard load does with 28.6gr of X-Terminator. (Yes, that X-T load is high for 223 specs, but about right in line for 5.56 data if you interpolate a little bit with what Western Powders publishes. It's also a load I worked up that gives good case life and accuracy in cooler temps like right now, but should be backed off a bit for hot summers.)

The 40gr Vmax with 31.0gr of Lever did 3410 fps, indicating that Lever is just too bulky for best results with that bullet weight. X-Terminator and a couple other powders can do significantly better with the 40gr.

Just based on what I saw today, I think in my rifle's 223 Wylde chamber at least, Lever is probably better suited to 55gr and heavier bullets.

Also for comparison - this same rifle with the 75gr BTHP / 25.5gr Lever load mentioned by The Kid does 2720 fps, at least in these cooler temps (~45° F). That load can be pushed over 2800 fps in this rifle without sacrificing case life, as long as the gas is turned down. It's not at all friendly to suppressor use though, with a lot more gas in the face compared to the Benchmark or 8208 loads described above.
I'd trust AR comp in anything from 69-77 grains, only because those are the weights I've used it in. AR comp is a very forgiving powder and burns clean. Works great in all of my AR rifles, which include 223/556, 6WOA, and 308W. I can't say the same for 8208, which I did not like as well...

Yep. Word is it's within a few fps of Varget.
Thanks.

I can't get Varget to meter well in my Dillon RL550, but it's most accurate with this bullet.

If Precision meters better than Varget, I need to get a jug...
Right now Trailboss.

But my goal might be a little different than others. I've been using CFE a bit lately as I picked up a bit of it a while back. If I was buying I think I'd look at IMR 8208.

AA2460 is close to 8208 in what way? Burn rate - sure, but so are a bunch of other powders.

Those two are different in just about every other way - charge weights, max velocity potential, temp sensitivity, powder type, etc. 8208 is a short extruded stick powder, 2460 is a ball powder. 8208 is relatively insensitive to temp changes, but 2460 is pretty sensitive at least in 5.56 with heavy bullets.

Maybe you were thinking of a different powder, not 2460?
