Anyone have a good suggestion
I think I want an 18 in barrel
A bit on the lighter side

Suggestions?

Hank
M&P 10
Common preferences out there tend to be:

CMMG
PSA
Aero
Daniel Defense
Brownells
Rainer
DPMS
Windham
There seems to be a few good ones for sure
I am thinking about an Armalite tactical 18

Had some questions about my other Armalite and the CS was outstanding

For 600 less some of the PSA look pretty good
Gets a bit confusing
Hank
Armalite is a good buy on a great rifle.

PSA is, well, PSA................could be OK if you check everything over, make sure the BCG is of a decent heritage & shoot it enough to know you can count on it when needed.

DD is not what I'd call mid-range if you are referring to price, but they're good.

I still enjoy my DPMS/Remington 20” G2 Hunter. It’s fairly compact and lightweight. Similar OAL to a 20” short action bolt gun.
I've had an Armalite for years. It's been a good gun and is very accurate. It loves 175gr MK with 45gr of Varget and piled those into a 5 shot that was 1/2" wide by 3/4" tall. I know the vertical stringing was due to my bag technique or lack thereof.

Armalite's stainless barrels are made by Wilson and I think they are comparable to their 223 barrels that White Oak loves to use.

I think it was on US Rifle Teams.com some guy was trying to get one of those to shoot. He pretty much gave up. Yes, the BCG was quite the POS.

I was thinking that rifle too, but the op said 18" barrel.

Tyrone, would horizontal stringing be from poor bag technique?
What about an Aero Precision? Seems to fit the bill for what you are wanting.

I agree with this. Get an M5 one with the ATLAS S-ONE rail to save some weight. I have one I built using mostly Aero parts plus an 18” Faxon Pencil profile barrel. Pretty light for an AR-10 size rifle and plenty accurate.

Daniel Defense is very good, but I would put them more toward higher end price group, than mid range.

Yes, it's a notorious problem with ARs because of the bottom angle of the A1 & 2 stocks and various collapsibles. It's the reason dedicated BR guns have a straight stock.

I'm not trying to be condescending or Capt. Obvious, you've obviously figured out how to shoot an AR off a bench. I just say this for the audience. BR is definitely a skill that has to be practiced and having the correct equipment helps.
Lots of very good info Thank You all
I have an older first design Armalite and it has a drop in quad rail which is not my favorite
and I was looking at replacing the hand guard and by the time I do that being an obsessive compulsive I looked at the money and started to think about a new lighter rifle

After the really great CS I got from Armalite and all the positive stuff I know about them I looked there first
I could like with 20in there are some benefits I just wanted to keep it quick and light

Hank
Hank, there isn't a whole lot out there in the AR10 World that is quick and light. If you keep your current 10B, at a minimum, you're looking at replacing the barrel to get any significant weight savings. The Armalite fiberglass FF tube isn't very heavy.

I haven't picked up a Tac18. What are those weighing in at?

Thanks tyrone. None of mine are benchrest rifles, but i notice when my head isnt in the game, i horizontal string them more. Then if i switch rear bags, ive noticed a huge difference in accuracy as well. I saw this the other day while shooting my m&p 10 6.5cm. The trigger pull on this rifle is slightly heavier than my other ar's, so that could also be a factor. Thanks for the help. Im still learning these ar's..
Sheesh! When it comes to benching ARs I'm asking YOU! smile

The Armalite TAC18 is coming in 8.8

The Savage MSR in 308 is 7.7 it is a 16in barrel

Not sure there is a lighter than that

I am not looking for the lightest just relatively light

The m&p 10 I suggested also weighs 7.71 pounds. It also has 5R rifling and a decent trigger. You could also fix up your armalite. As for a lighter hand guard, im running a UTG pro on mine and it is quite a bit lighter than what it came with from the factory. The downfall to the armalite is trying to find a barrel for it.
Barnes Precision Machine LR-10 of CQB-10 are my choice. I shoot one for long range gas gun matches and the other for 3-Gun:
