I've had Ruger #1's in 220 Swift, 7mm Mag, 300 H&H, 45-70 and 458 Win Mag, for some reason got the hankering for another one, this time in 7x57/275 Rigby, not knocking the rifle/brand/build at all, but when did prices skyrocket?

I always bought or sold around 7 to 900 bucks, holy damn, they're 13 to 1400 bucks and up today, kind of a shell shocker, guess I shoulda been keeping up.
Posted By: Pappy348 Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/08/20
Gotta climb out from under that rock from time to time.

Hell, I bought a brand new .243 from SAS a few years ago for $769, IIRC. He had some other similar deals at the time, but ol’ Dumbazz here had to buy the 10 pounder. At least I got my money back when I sold it.
Posted By: gunner500 Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/08/20
LOL, you're right Pappy, I still have an eye out for a pretty 7x57/275 with nice wood.................................it's that damn bag of ammo I keep staring at every time I walk by the den safe, recently found, loaded over 20 years ago, it is 100 [well 98 after chrono] beautiful brand new Norma cases loaded with 175gr Hornady round nosed bullets at 2409 fps over 4350 powder, I want to shoot those damn loads in a new Ruger #1. cool
Posted By: War_Eagle Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/08/20
Maybe 10 years...maybe 8. When Ruger dropped the #1 as a regular cataloged item and a few distributors went to managing only small runs...I'd say that was the beginning of the ever increasing prices.

You can still find some sub-$1K...but those are usually older models...with rather plain wood. Most folks on GB have taken advantage of the semi-discontinued status and ask for stupid prices if the wood is good and the chambering is something other than a .243, .270 or .30-06.

I missed a 7x57 RSI on GB a few weeks ago with great wood that sold for $1450...and I feel that was about where prices are going to hover for a while. I just had my settings wrong and didn't catch the end time was set for a timezone one hour earlier than I was paying attention to. cry

I decided to see what else was out there for RSI's with good figure. Ran across this K model in .308. Bid was already at $1800 when I started following it. Really surprised me when it went for over $3400 by the time the auction finally ended.

Keep your eyes open, be diligent and be patient...there are deals to be had. But normal prices have definitely climbed significantly in the last few years.
Posted By: gnoahhh Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/08/20
Indeed. Deals are still to be had. Shop smart and shop a lot. Explore used gun dealers with an internet presence, not just GB and GI.

I bought a 70's vintage Douglas barreled 1A in beautiful condition for $600 less than a year ago. A 6.5x55 1A (Lipsey's) in as-new condition fell into my lap at the same time for a fair bit less than the prices you are seeing on the internet auction sites. Perseverance pays.
Posted By: HeavyLoad Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/08/20
I bought my 338win mag for $600 from a guy at work 5yrs ago. Sold the scope that was on it for $150 and put a Leupold on it.
My other no1 was a tropical 458winmag I bought off GB for $500 all so about 5yrs ago. Traded it for a S&W 29-3 then traded it for a Colt Ltw Commander.
Deals are out there it depends a lot on calibers and wood grade.
Posted By: hookeye Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/08/20
LOL.....bought my hunter 4 digit w orig rings for just under a K.
Posted By: LeonHitchcox Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/08/20
The last No 1 I bought was $265 NIB, of course that was the early 1970s. I am amazed at the price increase of No 1s. Probably would still buy one if it was the right caliber in good condition.
Posted By: gunner500 Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/08/20
Dang, Thanks for the info War Eagle and gnoahhh, a Douglas barreled #1 has to be a good thing, the only fussy #1 I had was the 7 mag, i'll keep a hard eye out, I do expect this to take time for the right one, appreciate the tips.

HeavyLoad, you got a deal, then bought, sold and traded to get set like you want, love when that happens.

Hook, most likely will find and old red pad in 7x57, that's the hope anyway.

LeonHitchcox, do you still have that rifle?
Posted By: hookeye Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/09/20
There was a decent 06 A model at one LGS, vyt he wanted 950 no scope or rings.

Thought that high, few dings. Not bad.

Saw the vert rings on the other at a shop and dude shot ne a price and whipped out the money.

Nice grab Hook!

Does anyone know if 1977 year model made #1's had the Douglas barrels?

Hey Gunner - in 1977 they could have a mix of Douglas or Wilson barrels.

Hello Tex, long time no read, glad you stopped in, Thanks for the info Sir, abuddy has a buddy with an RSI in 7x57, he'll be able to shoot me a couple pics in a few days, said it's flawless with rather plain wood, that may be okay though, you and i both have hit the wood lottery plenty of other times.

One good thing about a plain wood stocked #1 is it makes it less painful to use and suffer the scratches!
Posted By: gunner500 Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/09/20
LOL, agreed War Eagle, Bud said it was a deep rich red color walnut, just kinda plain, that may be fine, just grabbed the old gloss 1-3/4-5 Burris off the safe top and gave it a good dusting, the tube length is plenty long enough for the funky ring/scope tube set up on the #1's, 5 power will be plenty fine for 300 yard hunting with 175gr Hornady round nosed bullets at 2400 fps provided the accuracy is there.

I have a Liberty (1976) #1A in 7x57 (no, it's not for sale smile ) and the rifling in the barrel is very well formed, but rough as hell. It was obviously not lapped before rifling. It still shoots well, under 1½", but I should really fire lap it, to smooth it up.

I will say, I have never seen a #1A or #1V that I would call inaccurate, though some were better than others.
Posted By: gunner500 Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/10/20
grin Thanks Tex, a can of wipeout, 50 sticks of new brass, and a kit of Tubbs 7mm bore slickers may be in order, would be a fun weekend project, that 220 Swift Varnminter I had was a rag holer with 55gr NBT's in calm conditions.

GRRRR - I meant to say, never seen a 1B or 1V that I'd call inaccurate. Can we no longer edit posts?

The Swifts are supposed to often be very accurate. The .22-250 in my avatar greatly benefitted from fire lapping!

Gunner I have a 275 Rigby so just send me the ammo LOL. I recently bought a Lipsey's 250/300 and will someday restock it. A new #1 in 35 Whelen with advertised A+ wood cost me $1600 bucks. The wood is nice especially in the forearm and it shoots well. A used #1 in 405 from here was also $1600 but came scoped and lots of reloading supplies. I can use the bullets in both the 405 and my 450/400.
Covid provided me way to much time on my hands so I bought a varmint in 220 swift sold the wood and had the action tricked out some and an exquisite piece of English walnut for the stock and case colored all the metal. Caliber is 300 H&H. I need to get some pics and post them but I've been busy with doctors and went to Wyoming and Sunday is opening day of rifle season but I'll get around to it.
Posted By: Barryt Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/12/20
Well, new ones in Canada are going for $2400-2800, and most good used are starting around $1600 when you can find them, so you're not feeling the pinch like us Northerners!

.35 whelen?

Or you picked up a customized one in .35 remington?
Posted By: GSPfan Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/12/20
My mistake but a good catch on your part. It's a 35 Whelen the custom gun is a 300 H&H but you do have me thinking lol. thanks for the heads up on the caliber I edited the post so it's correct now
Posted By: gunner500 Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/12/20
Tex, noted, on the build correction, good to hear about your 22-250 enjoying the polish job, I miss that Swift sometimes, it was awkward to carry, but get your back against a big rock or tree, fling open the Harris bi-pod, and it'd get rock steady, 'Smith done something to the trigger that really lightened it up, know he didn't install a Jard or Klepp??

LOL GSP, I have one of the rounds from that old bag I loaded long ago sitting right here on this desk, the Norma brass is smooth as glass and the old style Hornady 175gr round nose has very little exposed lead at the tip, wonder if that means they are slower openers and deep penetrators? especially leaving at a mild 2400 fps, better idea, if I don't buy this RSI maybe you could just send that 275 Rigby to me ; ]

BarryT, holy crap man, the 900 bucks my old buddys buddy is asking me for his 7x57 RSI must be a hell of a fair deal, I haven't looked around in shops or on the net, I know a handful of men that have a few guns, they in turn know a few guys with a chit-ton of firearms, mostly very old family gun collections, some in the several hundreds, I start whining about something I'd like to have/buy, old buddy takes it from there, think he's hardwired into some kind of cell phone app with the rest of those guys, if one has something they want to get rid of, or has a little pity on me, then i'll get a happy phone call. smile

Still waiting to see pics of the little RSI, the old gloss Burris and bag of ammo is ready, be fun to get it scoped up, zeroed, and shoot a deer or pig with it this season.
Posted By: GSPfan Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/12/20
The market has changed over the last couple of years. I had an RSI in 7x57 a couple of years ago. Sold it on the fire ANIB and had a hard time getting $1200 for it as I remember.
Gunner my 275 Rigby is a custom build on a 1909 Argentine Mauser action. I'm hoping that next year things will straighten out and I can do that Axis hunt I've been dreaming about. If I do that's the rifle I'll take. If you want to come along you can drool over it. LOL
Posted By: gunner500 Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/17/20
10-4, Thanks for the clarification GSP, if you shoot, then eat an Axis, it WONT be your last hunt for them, the meat is the best I've had stateside, comparable to fire cooked Eland and Kudu loin in a bush camp on African Safari.

The drooling program may be one I cant resist ; ] I have ample time to ask Wife make a bib with side splash guards!
Posted By: gunner500 Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/17/20
BTW, got to see pics of the 7x57 RSI yesterday, talk about dead wood! it is however a very clean rifle, didn't see a mark on the wood or blue, guy said in a text he may have fired 10 rounds through it since bought new in 1977, i'll have to think about this one for awhile, it's not advertised, so not going anywhere.
Posted By: GSPfan Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/17/20
Ive had Eland and Kudu cooked over a bush fire so if the Axis comes close I'll probably gain a few pounds. I'm hoping the new 300 H&H will put a deer in the freezer this afternoon.
Posted By: gunner500 Re: Holy Smokes! - 11/18/20
LOL, You'll gain some weight then, hope you busted a deer this afternoon, need to get my mind clear and go do some deer hunting myself.

Welp, couldn't get passed the dead wood on the #1 RSI in 7mm Mauser, and single shot forum I realize, but, another bud stepped up and sent me pics of a clean as a pin red pad tang safety 77 with a nice stock in 7x57, another bud that's passing through in a few days is going to drop it off, i'll zero this new rifle with the old gloss 2-7 leupold I just yanked off a pre-64 fwt in 243 that I traded for a pre-64 Westerner in 264 WM, finally have a rifle/use for the 175gr Hornady round nose ammo I loaded back in the early 90's, believe i'll have plenty of time to use it on a Christmas deer hunt over in Arkansas with any left over buck or doe tags! cool

Ingwe or any other 7mm Mauser heavy bullet hunters here, I loaded the old 175gr Hornady round noses to 2400 fps to use in a 96? [I believe it was] Mauser I had at the time, is it a safe bet I can pick my path to the vitals on a deer with this load?

Will be hunting a dang tight pocket/thicket and shots on deer will be close and most likely in the chest or in a going away ham, Thanks in advance.

I was hoping you were going to send me some LOL. The heaviest I've used is the 160 NAB in a 7X57 AI.

Thanks Ingwe, will proceed accordingly ; ]

GSP, lol, if a bud hadn't sent me pics of that sweet little 77 I would have been dividing them up between a guy that sent me a pm and you, I shoot 175gr old style Grand Slams and Partitions in my hot rod 7x57 at 2700 fps, it's a little hammer.

Pete, yes sir they are, seems a lot of folk are holding on to certain weaponry in these uncertain times.
