How’s everyone liking the new Henry single shot 30-30? I’ve got one that has dnz one pice scope mount and leupold vx3i 1.5-5x20. It shoots federal 150gr ammo in dime size groups.
When I was a kid I had a nef that wouldn’t group better than 1.5”.

The NEF 30-30s are some of their most accurate rifles, especially if one floats the forend with a rubber o-ring, tunes the trigger, and handloads. I have a Henry lg and it has become a favorite of mine. I have heard great things about their ss rifles after the trigger springs have been replaced. I just wish Henry made them with a MC buttstock that compliments scoped shooting without the need for a cheek riser.

I wish I had a nef 30-30 again

I handled a Henry .243 ss rifle at SW yesterday. The first thing I noticed was the weight. I don't know the exact weight but I'd guess it's 7+lbs sans scope.

They aren’t light, but fall well within the range I prefer. Walnut and steel aren’t getting any lighter. Get one in .45/70 and you’ll probably appreciate the weight. Most lever-actions are far from light too, compared to synthetic-stocked bolt actions, and I see the Henry SS as competing with those, and winning on price, and often accuracy. Hard to find another rifle as nice as a Henry SS for around $500.

The triggers on rifles produced in 2020 and later are the new, much-improved ones. Based on reviews of new lever actions that I’ve read, most have heavy trigger pulls. They are stocked to accommodate iron sights, but so are most leverguns.

I like everything about them but the price. It is hard for me to justify paying near $500 for a break action single shot that is so much like the H&Rs that I have had over the last 50 years. I know it is better, but not that much better. I love nice single shots. I have owned a couple of Ruger #1s and a Ruger #3 and currently own several TC Contenders.

If I could load pics of my 30-30 you would like it a lot and ya I spent 83$ on a dnz mount and over 500 on a leupold scope and 545$ on the gun but the gun shoots like a dream and too boot I bought the old style stock from Henry so my forend has the cut checkering all the way around not just on the side

Funny, I could never bring myself to buying one of those oogly H&Rs, even when they were less than $200. $500 ain’t much in 2022.

Check out the prices of NEF rifles on gunbroker. Starting bids at $400 or higher, up into the $500 range, and actual current bids on the two I'm looking at of $390 and $455. And they definitely look like oogly ol' behind the door farm rifles.

Been trying to talk myself into a .30-30 or .357 Mag Henry single shot. Have dies and plenty of components for a .30-30 but no rifle to shoot them in. Marlins and Winchesters are sky high these days, Ruger hasn't come out with theirs yet but if the current 1895 is any indication they will run way over $1000 as well.

I want a .357, but they are very hard to find.

Bought a .30-.30 locally (used/like new with the box, etc..). Early serial number that hadn't had the recall done. Sent it in and can't wait to get it back and try it out. Pretty wood and thinking a 125 grain Nosler BT would be fun in it.

Found one on gunbroker at a less than exorbitant price (relative to current times) and picked it up this morning. Have only had time to examine it and check throat length for various bullets but first impressions are definitely impressive. In a way it's just a glorified NEF or H&R Ultra but it's like taking those to their ultimate level.

Mine was apparently made on January 17 of this year going by the inspection sticker. I'll go ahead and get this out of the way, but for a mid-$400 rifle, this thing has better figure in the wood, is better finished, better fit of wood to metal (way better), better trigger and in general just better put together than the last three Ruger No. 1's I've bought, all at well over $1000.

Out of the box it weighs 6 lbs 14.5 ounces on my postal scale and balances right behind the forend. Not a lightweight but it's not unduly heavy either.

The trigger is a very pleasant surprise. It breaks cleanly and consistently at 3 1/4 lbs. No wiggle, no takeup, just a firm set and a crisp break with a bit of overtravel. The throat is pretty standard for a .30-30 which is good. A Sierra 150 FN and a Hornady 150 RN seated to hit the lands have their cannelures only a couple hundredths ahead of the case mouth. A bullet from an Accurate mold 31-170 hits the lands with the case mouth just even with the front of the crimp groove, couldn't ask for a better fit there. Of course, you don't need to crimp a bullet in a single shot but just mentioning that as a reference. The Sierra 125 spitzer and a Hornady 150 spire point can both be seated to hit the lands with plenty of bullet inside the case and their ogives well outside the case mouth - OAL is way over standard for a magazine fed rifle but in this rifle it's not an issue. Lots of fun possibilities here.

The comb is the weak spot, it's definitely low, low, low. I tried various base mounts with a Sig Romeo5 and a Burris Fastfire sitting on a little Weaver base and you still have to raise your head to sight through them. With the Henry picatinny base any scope even in low rings requires you to have the comb about in line with your lower teeth.

Getting some loads together this afternoon and will brave the cold tomorrow morning or Friday to do some initial workup and will report back on those results.

If this rifle turns out to be as accurate as I'm hoping that might be my next toy. They do seem to get a premium price compared to some of the other chamberings.

I sent mine off as per post above. Customer service was super and upon quick return the trigger is now very good without the creep/wobble and everything feels smooth. Very limited chance to shoot it with only factory ammo. I did see slightly over an inch for a couple of 3 shot groups with 170 Remingtons. Still want to try some lighter spitzers and see how they do.

I miss my Handi Rifle in 30/30 Ackley Improved. If I find a Henry in 30/30 with nice wood..👍
I already have the 357 Henry…. Might ream to MAXimum. Having a couple hundred 357 Maximum cases is feeding this urge!
Strange to want a 30/30 AI when I could just get the more powerful 308. Maybe I just like having something with a rimmed case??
Many of us have posted about missing the Handi Rifles, and how they “could have been upgraded just a bit for just a little more money”... WELL, the HENRY IS HERE and pretty much fulfills that wish. Now,… if they would offer a version with a higher comb for scope use…🙄

I have one of these. I finally settled on 3031 and some 150 seconds for it. It shoots great to 200 and I have killed deer to 168 with it. I tried several pointy bullets and went back to the old standards. It wears a6x Super Sniper scope.
