Have you tried it without the pad? A thin steel buttplate would work. Just sayin

I have a stock that had been cut down 1” by a previous owner that would need refinished. Checkering is still good. I have just been too lazy to post it in classifieds.

My problem with the No.1 is not with the Length of Pull, which seems just right; it’s with insufficient scope eye relief. Scope mounting is simply too far forward for me. I must awkwardly crawl the stock in an unnatural way just to get a full field of view. Some long-bodied, higher-magnification scopes extend back far enough to offer full field of view, but are far too bulky for a traditional stalking rifle. Ruger extension rings were not the answer either, as they were one size taller, of ungainly appearance, and didn’t move the scope back quite far enough anyway. So, as much as I admire the No.1 action, and love the appearance of the 1-A, particularly with the 24” barrel, white bead front and express rear sights of the .275 Rigby, I must bid it fond farewell in favor of this guy:



This TCR83 Aristocrat provides me with perfect scope eye relief and comes to point on target like a fine shotgun, though the cockamamie safety does require some accommodation when on the hunt.

If you could get past your aesthetic objections to offset Ruger rings, they really do work. I have the same issue - I doubt many here have neck issues as egregious as mine which requires scope installation to be farther rearward than "normal", and found those mounts to solve my issues. (And I too dislike the use of scopes other than short straight tube numbers on stalking rifles.)

My solution for #1A 6.5x55 and Vari-X III 1.5-5:

Tried the Ruger offset rings with a Leupold 2-7x33. It shot great off bags:



But, advancing the magnification above 2x had me crawling the stock again.

It’s a most beautiful rifle, but I’m afraid it’s still gotta go. I don’t keep me no non-shooting safe queens. I’m sure it’ll make someone else very happy (someone a bit more flexible than me).

Alas, with its Jard 1-1/2 pound trigger and Trop safety, it coulda really been something, but for the scope mounting problem. Too far forward for a regular scope, too far back for a scout scope.

Ditch the scope and put a New England Custom Gun Peep on it.
Problem solved.
Got scopes on both my #1’s, including a 1a 7x57, but I’m built like a fat orangutan.

The old Burris Signature's with the adjustment turret well forward worked pretty well on a #1 I used to own. My son now has that scope, a 2-8X, on a M77 RL where it clears the rear sight.

I’ve got the TCR83 Aristocrat with .223, .243 and .30-06 barrels, which I like very much and it fits me very well. I won’t keep a gun I don’t shoot, even if it’s as nice as this No.1, unless it has independent sentimental value. So, I’m hoping my discard can become another’s treasure.

Guess I’m just gonna hafta break down and list it in the classifieds, and quit wringing my hands over it.

My .275 is the most accurate #1 I've had without any mods and even came with decent wood. No, mine is not for sale!



And while the wood is not quite as nice as yours, it's better than #1 average

I've held that rifle and Pugs ain't grinnin' ya. Thank goodness he got that rifle or I might never have pried the 6.5x55 out of his hands!

Are you selling the N. 1 in 275??

I’ve heard tell that the walnut for the .275 Rigby No.1s was from a batch obtained in Australia. I don’t know if that’s true; but, I want it to be true.

I’ve been strenuously arguing with myself, detailing the reasoning why I absolutely must let it go. Then, I see a post like this one from Pugs, review the photos I’ve posted, and I am reminded that it’s just too nice to let go. I am truly hopeless!

So, it looks like I’ll be taking it out of its box, yet again, and returning it to the safe. Though I’ve tried a number of times before, I just can’t seem to part with it.

Instead of breaking up it seems that we’ll be making up again.

You’ll always be able to sell it for more than you paid, but you’ll never replace it.
