Wonder how much a #3 action is worth.
Thinkin bout parting mine out.
Posted By: Pappy348 Re: Ruger #3 - 10/17/22
Why not sell the complete rifle?
Posted By: hookeye Re: Ruger #3 - 10/17/22
Because it was rebarreled to .219 dwasp and whoever drilled and tapped for the bases got one a little off. Had to run redfield bases and windage adj rings ( worked).
I used Burris signatures and it lined up fine but ring was over. Got the offset inserts to nove ring more centered but never did.

Am parting the gun out, kinda sorta

Took the Canjar out, put reg back in. Took #1 buttstock off and reg back on.

I suppose if i wanted to go cheap and make it.more usable incould have the barrel rebored to 356 win.

Am kicking that idea around LOL

I had a .45/70 that must’ve had a barrel screwed in crooked as I couldn’t get it dialed in with the irons. Long, long ago, and pretty far away.

I’ve had good luck with the Henrys and that’s cooled my jets somewhat on spending a bunch on wild notions. The most recent one is a .357 and has wood that’s just stunning. $500! Fun toy for an old man.

How about .444?😳 That oughta light you up pretty well!

I have an EGW base for a #1B. I could just have the bbl D&T for it. And bed the base to make up contour diff.
Put the #1 stock back on and run it for a season on chucks. I have 90 handloads left to burn LOL

The #3 and #1 hole spacing different so putting my rib on would be no big deal.

But if I find a B barrel in .223 I could have that shortened to 22" and rebored to .35 remington.

Penrod does .358 win but not .35 rem.
Dunno who else does #1/#3 rebarrel work.

McGowen does.

Just had PacNor rebarrel a No. 1. Very happy with the job they did.

Went to a gun show here on the west side of VA a few weeks ago. There was a guy there with several actions, one being a Ruger #3. He was asking $795 and it was still sitting on the table when i left Sunday afternoon.

I have 450 in mine, so don't think im totally hosed LOL
Posted By: Pappy348 Re: Ruger #3 - 10/17/22
Yeah, you’re practically playing with their money on that one.

An unsold Ruger #3 action at $795, I can surely understand such! frown
I have one in 45/70 and a nice little SS for what it is. But not just an action in that price range. Not considering by the time pieced together even doing the work onesellf, upside down in costs most probably.
If to build a custom rifle, the #1 action the vehicle of choice and even then, likely I'd try to buy one with rechambering possibilities to mitigate costs.
Were I the O/P, I'd just sell the rifle with full disclosure and be done with it rather than trying to milk every dollar. I do wish him luck, whatever!
Just my take.
Best! John

Ive had several #1s and prefer them.
But got into this rig decent.
Just wondering what the action would be worth alone.
Ill proly toss in corner and see what barrels pop up.
I think a short muzzle heavy 35 rem single shot migjt be a cool timber bambi slayer.

On a side note I would love to be able to find a #3 in 30-40 Krag!
Posted By: UpThePole Re: Ruger #3 - 10/21/22
#3 in 30-40 is second only to a 45-70 for inducing pain and loose fillings.
Posted By: saddlering Re: Ruger #3 - 10/21/22
I'd think a #3 in 35 remy would be a great woods rifle!
Posted By: Pappy348 Re: Ruger #3 - 10/21/22
They made a few .375 Wins IIRC. Good luck finding one, and then good luck paying for it.
Posted By: greydog Re: Ruger #3 - 10/25/22
I think the #3 is a nice enough action and like it better than the No.1. That said, I don't think I would pay more than 500 dollars for either one. I've made some nice rifles on both actions, but both are a bit of an action kit. GD

I have a No. 3 in 30-40 and took me forever to find it. One of my favorite single shots.

I have not found my 30-40 to be bad recoil but I shoot Sharps rifle in 45-110.

i paid around 650 ish ea for 2 barreled no 3 actions earlier this summer. Sourcing the stocks was a bit over 200 ea. Came out ahead for the most part, they seem to be selling in the 1k range. Sure a few slip by closer to 800, but north of 1k seems to be the direction they're heading.

Have decided to use up the handloads a friend of my dad made and then rebarrel. Currently .219 dwasp.

Ran into the gentleman recently and he said it was a short wasp originally, but reamed to long. So its a long w a short neck LOL. Shoots half inch w the 50gr Nosler BTs on Varget.

So maybe try to pop yote after deer season, chucks in early summer and then send it off for rebarrel.

I found Redding 3 die set, and 3 trim/ form dies. Dont think Pops ever used em since his coworker did the reloading.

I believe McGowen also will rebarrel them.
