I've got my eye on a TCR 87 in 308 with a 20" barrel. I've always been a fan of the Contender and Encore rifles. These appear to be well made rifles. I'm looking for opinions from members on their lines, or dislikes on this rifle.
Thanks,
John Boy

There have been several threads on the TCR Aristocrat (83) and Hunter (87), some disliking the wonky safety, others concerned that if parts are needed, you may be out of luck unless you happen to have a spare TCR from which to draw parts.

I have owned a few over the years and favor the Aristocrat (model 83) due to wood quality and how easy it is to remove the forearm compared to the Hunter model. It also has a double set trigger which is a nice feature that was eliminated for the Hunter model 87. Scope mounts may be scarce although I believe a weaver mount is still available. Still, it's a really nice feeling rifle and I expect when I find one that appeals to me, I'll get it.

Good luck in your efforts and let us see photos when you get it.

OSU,
Thanks for the information. You've addressed some of my concerns. This one is a 87. It stops or due to the long trigger guard. I kept looking to see if someone removed party of the double set.
I've stuck with Encores, Contenders and Remingtons since parts weren't generally an issue. The problem is I'm a fool for single shots.....
Asking price is $799. With all the gb fees and taxes and dealer fees I'll be into it for $900-950....

Are there any other bids? How long have you been watching it? Big question- has the auction expired and been renewed by the seller? if its been online for a while and has gotten no bids, you might be able to reach out to the seller and offer him a reduced price, including shipping, for it. Doesn't work every time but sometimes if the seller is really ready for it to be gone, they will listen to good offers. PM me if you want to talk about this more.

I saw that one too while looking for Contenders. You might look at this one too. It could be a good deal if the bidders don’t get crazy

This is probably really good advice because this TCR308 is a renewed auction. The first one expired last week with zero bids. I only know because I was watching it and almost bought it.

Did they make a carbine or someone shorten the barrel?
Posted By: John_Boy Re: Thompson TCR.... - 01/13/23
No screw holes for a front sight and it has a recessed target crown.

Supporting what John boy said, I believe this barrel was shortened. Someone did a nice looking job with the crown but it isn't factory.

Severely tempted, but after looking at the safety operation it might be a no go. They took something simple and complicated it. Must have been designed by the government...

One major reason I am an Encore fan. No safety, no problem....

I'm sure there is a way to defeat that wonky safety.

I picked up my first TCR 87 in 308 the other day. So far I am really liking it aside from the safely. They are handy yet very solid feeling. If this one shoots well I will likely keep it.

There was one for sale on gunbroker over a year ago. it was priced high and did not sell for a long time. I think eventually it sold. That's the only one I've seen but I'll keep an eye out for you.

As long as WTB barrels are gonna pop in here -

Anyone have a 6.5x55 TCR barrel they want to sell plz drop me a line.

I have no need for one, have multiple 6.5x55 rifles and a 270 barrel for my TCR but I also have a real affection for the 6.5 swede..

For some odd reason I've never owned one, despite collecting single shots smile

I fixed that recently - saw a TCR 83 with jaw-dropping wood, and grabbed it. Don't really need another .22-250, but smile

If someone has one of the "mid-size" barrels available, .243 through .308, I'd be interested in it.
