I have a super 14 44 mag barrel but recently found a super 14 41 mag for a good deal.

I have no experience with the 41 mag. Was just curious on what I should expect.

Is there quite a bit of difference in recoil?
Or effective range?

This set up is going to be my woods gun.

I shoot both in lighter handguns, and the 41 has noticeably less recoil. I like the 41 for that reason.

I.love the 41 mag, it is a flat shooting cartridge that is very effective on Deer and Antelope in my experience the 41 penetrates deeper than the 44

The 41 is a very nice round but I’d be tempted to have it rechambered to 414 Supermag. Still less felt recoil than the 44, but extends your range and energy. RCBS 41 mag dies work and Starline makes the proper brass. Congratulations on picking up the barrel!

And it shoots flatter, I’ve shot one for 44 years, a T/C 10” Contender, hunt with it every year and it works. 19.8 gr. H-110 210 Hornady XTP is its preferred load, chrono’s in the 1550’s

I also have a Ruger SRH in 41 Mag. That likes 21gr H-110 and the now discontinued Nosler 210 HP.

I'd go with the .41 Mag simply for the sheer oddity of it...plus, you can always load heavyweight 265gr hardcast lead bullets over an adult dose of H110.

I went Super 14 in .35 rem.

I would try the .41.

I found .44 is more than I can manage in the contender (G2, 12" barrel). It "smarts" a lot more than my little super blackhawk with the same loads. Not as bad as the 329PD, mind you. This barrel is going down the road, as is my 14" .30-30, for the same reason .. as soon as I can manage time to get 'em packaged up, etc.

I think my limit is .357. Looks like. No point trying to prove something and lose.

I had an 8" .44 Mag in a T/C Contender, recoil was downright uncomfortable...I did not enjoy shooting it.

I guess I'm kind of the odd man out here. I don't have any single shot pistols in either caliber, but I have several S&W revolvers in each. I am a big .41 magnum fan (I also like 16 gauge shotguns), but I honestly don't see a lot of difference in the two from a shooting standpoint with full-house loads. I'm finding that, anymore, I need to limit the amount of heavy-recoil handgun shooting I do or I will suffer a certain amount of joint pain. I will say that my 357 PD is in close contention with my 500 S&W for most unpleasant handgun to shoot award, but that's an outlier.

I was once asked, by a regional outdoor column newspaper guy, what handgun I'd choose if I could only have one and my reasoning. I told him my plain-vanilla, 6" 657 Smith. With a 220 grain cast bullet at 1000 - 1100 fps it would last almost forever and do 90% of what any rational person would want to do with a handgun.

Brass (and bullets) can be harder to buy for the .41, than the .44. If you go that route I'd acquire a lifetime supply of brass and maybe bullets. OTOH the best .44 bullets can also be spotty in availability.

I'd also scrutinize the barrel carefully; maybe go with an MGM or Bullberry over a TC barrel. Years ago I had a a scoped 10" .44 Contender, and my S&W 629 could shoot tighter 50 yard groups with iron sights, than the scoped Contender!

Have never cared for the .41 mag, or the .45 Colt.

If I didn't want .44 mag recoil I'd drop to a .357 mag or max in a single shot.
Easier to find bullets.

Cases? Single shot. 100 ought to last a long while. So cost on that is no biggie if ya reload.

Factory ammo only? .357 mag or .44 mag.

I love the .41 magnum also. It is not very common anymore and it seems to be an orphan now. I have shot it plenty as well as the .44 mag. The .41 has less recoil but I think how much it bothers you depends more on the type gun you are shooting it in.
