Are the TCR 83 and 87 rifles basically undesireable since Thompson Center dropped all support, parts manufacture, etc? I have long admired them but never had the opportunity to shoot one - or own one. What are your experiences with these rifles and thoughts about ownership at this point?

thanks,
Dave

I like them (other than the safety) and have one with a couple barrels, a .32/40 (Thanx again Grasshopper...), and a SSK in .375/06 JDJ. I had intentions of acquiring an array of customs barrels in interesting calibers but alas, when T/C dropped them, monoblocs dried up and SSK was no longer able to make barrels.

Have you found them to be accurate? The lack of caliber choices with custom barrels not being an option is a bit discouraging. I think a 257 Roberts and a 7x57 for the TCR would be the catsazz.

My 2 barrels will hold a little over an inch with favorite loads.

You can always try to find used barrels for a fair price and use those monoblocks for "rebarreleing".
I have a TCR 87 with the single trigger. I had an '83, but I found the ergonomics of the double set trigger very uncomfortable/awkward for my hand. The safety is also bothersome.
The '87 is fine and these rifles are much nicer than the Encore in my opinion.

looking at the price of these rifles I would definately not use the word "undesireable"

I owned one for a month and had to sell it to take care of the family I more than doubled my money, but have never been able to find another for sale. I do not bemoan the lss, but now that times are better I would like buy another 83

There is one at my LGS right now with 2 extra BBLs I believe 7mm Rem mag, 22 Hornet, and 243. It's the one with the double triggers. All the BBls have burris scopes on them. He is asking $1500 for the complete package. What should I offer him or is this a decent price?

A TCR with a single bbl in excellent condition is worth $700 bareback; Barrels are $400 each, sans forend; scopes worth whatever - Sounds fair where I come from.

Thanks for the reply Rangr44. I think I might "need" to own it!
$400 for a barrel is very steep unless it is a special barrel. Look on gunbroker. Type TCR in the search bar. If anyone decides to sell an 87 or some of the not so common barrels drop me a line.

Well I went and got that TCR83 from my LGS it has a 22 hornet with open sights, 7mm-08 and 7mm Rem mag both with no sights. They all have scopes on them Burris's on the 7mm's and the hornet bbl has an old Weaver K-3 with the TV (Widefield) view. The gun and BBLs are mint. I too would like to add some Barrels, not sure whats out there yet but I like the odd ball calibers too. I probably will part with the 7mm mag BBL as I never was too fond of the caliber. Nothing wrong with it just a personal preference. They are quite an attractive gun to me and I do like the double set triggers.

Nice find. My buddy had one for a while and I always thought it was a really nice rifle. The minor drawback was the multi button safety setup . They should have stuck with a simple cross bolt sans the 2 button. They were also a bit expensive which I feel hurt their sales and why you don't see many. I always thought it a shame that all of the other single shot break opens rifles made in the US were just relatively cheap guns with beech stocks that were really just modified single barred shotguns .

I had a double trigger 3 barrel setup for a little while. Not terribly accurate with any of the barrels. I never could figger out what to use it for. 22-250, 25-06 custom shop, and I forget the third barrel. Not very memorable I guess. They were a pretty rifle, but heavy.

I have a 87Hunter in 308 I have been going to list. Nice rifle but not made in Finland.

Resurfacing a 5-9 year old thread. Never heard of the TCR 83's / 87's until I stumbled across one on GB earlier today while looking for a single shot 22 Hornet. Appear to be fairly nice reliable rifles.

What is a reasonable (fair) price for one in good condition in the current market? "Looks like" prices for completed sales have been any where from $400 up to $1200.

The prices for these rifles are all over the map, as noted. For a decent example with a single barrel in a desirable caliber, I would not pay more than about $650, and that would have to have half-way decent wood. There has been a TCR83 in 243 Win on GunAuction.com for months and months with no takers at $649. It has a few scratches/dings and someone more or less permanently plugged the open sight holes.

I have seldom been without one of these rifles over the last 35 years. I've gone through a few, but the '87 I have now I plan to keep with it's hard to find 26" silhouette weight 223 barrel and AAA wood. I've had barrels in 22 Hornet, 222 Rem., 223, 22-250, 220 Swift, 243 Win. and 30-30 (custom shop). I'd really like to find a 26" 7-08 factory silhouette barrel, but they're not very common. In the meantime, I just stumbled on a great deal yesterday on a 30-06 barrel with an Aristocrat fore-end while I used poking around different websites. I found it on an unlikely company's site. I paid $250 for both which is a heck of deal these days. So, it looks like I'll be dong some 30-06 reduced load shooting with my TCR. wink

PM me regarding a Very Nice stock and a plain fore end 87 with an SSK 9.3X74 barrel Redding dies RWS and Norma brass one box each. Barrel is UNFIRED gloss blue barrel no sights two scope bases and two boxes of Speer 270 grain bullets.

I "sold "it almost two years ago but I am not holding it any longer. The agreed upon price was $1250 face to face in Portland Oregon.

Of course I can send pictures...Also please understand the last rifle I shipped cost over $70 packed and insured properly.
.
Thanks, Bill

Nicest one I can recall seeing. Lucky you.
