Hey everyone, I have a #1V in 7mm mag that belonged to my grandfather. I am told that at the time that he purchased in the #1V was not offered in a 7mm mag chambering and that he had special ordered it this way. Seems like a bit of an odd ball set up but it's a beautiful piece topped with a vari-x III 2.5-8.

Anyways, do I have somewhat of a special rifle considering the specs?

It was not a "special order" item. It was cataloged for a number of years. That said, it is not all that common and does get some attention from some collectors, depending on condition, wood figure, etc.

They also made the 1V in some other odd or rare calibers: 243 Win., 300 Win Mag. and probably the rarest, 280 Rem.

I have a 1977 Ruger #1 I got for $575 in 2005.

I shot (3) mule does with it in 2010.

shooting off non swivel bi-pod on the ground, 11 pounds with bi pod, scope, and sling

10) 500yards .5" high 1" right"
adjusted turret so it says 6.5 moa, for 200 yard zero chart.

From prone with a ammo cheek rest the #1 can be rapid fired at a running deer, like the one in the above pic shot at 400 yards [when it stopped for a second].

That is the best rifle I ever hunted with.
I have build a number of rifles since, but nothing has really equaled the Ruger #1 7mmRM.

Thanks for the info guys. It won't be going anywhere but it's nice to know it's a bit more rare than other combinations. I've never actually shot it. Maybe this weekend. .....

Clarkm - Yours is the common 1B "sporter" version, not the 1V varmint model which have 24" barrels.

I have a #1V 24" in 223 that is a 1/2" gun.
I had a #1 26" 223 [before I lost it] that was a 1" gun.

Took mine to the range today with some old Remington 150gr PSP. I was excited to see the first 2 shots in the same hole but that must have been a fluke because after that it really opened up. Probably about a 2.5-3" group. Not too worried about it though considering the ammo being used.

Probably the prettiest gun I own either way and even better knowing that Grandpa hunted with it.

Sometimes Rem bullets foul fast. I heard they used close to pure Copper jackets and they are too soft.

Clean the Copper out and use premium bullets that are not moving too fast.

Your load is excessively hot!

I have read about the numerous options for remedying the forearm pressure problems. Are the methods that apply pressure for "tuning" really necessary or should bedding the forearm to the hanger to free float it be sufficient?

Try a variety of handloads first, before you start whittling on the forearm. Also, does it show any previous work to it, floating, marks on the screw, etc. ?

No previous modifications of any kind. I don't have the ability to hand load at the moment and I figured bedding the forearm to the hanger couldn't really hurt anything but maybe I should try a few different factory loads before I go too crazy.

Serial number would tell us a lot.

Since you are saying it is a "V", is it a 24" BBL? Seems there is always a lot of confusion when measuring the barrel. Measure fom end of barrel, to past the action around a half inch.

Ruger pretty much made 20", 22", 24" and 26" barrels on number 1's.
(I have dealt with a guy that has insisted he has a 23" Tropical, thinks it is a special order 23" barrel.)

Fill us in on the serial number, and from that we can date rifle etc.

Beautiful wood on your rifle. Make sure you never get rid of it.

It is indeed a 24" barrel and the serial # is 130-46870.

BTW, it's not going anywhere, I have a number of family "heirloom" guns and I am very sentimental about all of them. I'd sell a body part first if it came down to it.

It is a 1977 rifle; this is about the time that the 1V in 7mm RM was dropped from the catalog. Most like it was "special ordered " by a Dealer from a Distributor for your Grandfather. Not many dealers would stock this kind of rifle.
