So,
I installed this thing on my no.1A 7X57.
Shot it at 25 yards,and it was 4" high,with the rear sight all the way down.

I ordered a taller front sight with the white bead.
Took it to 100 yards,still rear sight all the way down.

Sierra 175 BTSP,45 grains IMR 4350,2 shots in an inch using a 6 o'clock hold dead center.

As blind as I am,I'm pretty happy with that.
I only shot twice,because I forgot my spotter,and couldn't tell where I was hitting on the target.
I was pretty pumped when I saw it.

I'll probably order a still taller front sight to get my elevation closer to center.

Nothing sexier than a 1A with open sights !!

The NECG rear is not a ghost ring, at least the one I've had for years isn't, they may have changed. The XS is s true ghost ring.

Leave out the aperture.

In summary, the NECG sight in factory form is about as good as it can get.

There are issues with leaving out the aperture on the NECG sight. First, the elevation slide is not a tight fit in its slot. The aperture actually locks the slide against the sight body to keep it from moving around. Without the aperture, it will move. Second, with the aperture removed, the resulting "hole" is not round. The body of the sight protrudes into the hole from both sides where the aperture contacts the body to lock the slide. It is like a circle that is partially truncated on both sides, leaving a hole that is taller than it is wide. These issues may not bother some folks, but they bother me. The movement of the elevation slide is not a real issue at close range, but as range increases the problem is amplified.

Someone wanting a larger aperture might be able to use one of the ones sold by
Williams, or carefully drill out the original and touch up the bare metal.

They make two different Ruger peep sights. Regular and Ghost Ring. The subject title is "Ghost ring" so I'm assuming the OP is referring to that one, if so your criticisms are off base. It basically looks like an XS with wings.

Yep, spot on alright. When you use the standard NECG Peep Sight outside the parameters of it's design, i.e. with the aperture removed, it doesn't work well as a ghost ring. I suppose that's why NECG also makes a Ghost Ring Sight which is the subject of the OPs post.

Mine is the top one.
The point of my post was how happy I was with how well it works.

I never would have dreamed I could be that accurate with open sights,and 53 year old eyes.

You made no mistake Mike. People don't realize NECG makes a ghost ring sight and, as noted, their original design doesn't work as one.
Alot of people, including me, get surprised by how well they can use aperture sights. Much more precise than a v-notch and much easier for old eyes to use. Without a scope on top, your #1 probably feels much more lively in the hand. Are you using a bead front sight? I see NECG offers a patridge style front sight insert for the Ruger. Many people that use ghost rings on lever guns prefer them.

I'm using the white bead front sight from NEGC.

The NECG ghost ring is a newer variation - and welcome. Those of us who tried to use the original with larger apertures discovered the problem with the hole with flats!

If you can'f find a blade that suits you, Dixie sells front sights made by, I believe, Ted Cash, that can easily be cut down to fit your ramp. They are made of a relatively soft metal that will cut with one of those X-Acto jewler's saws. I fitted one to a ML and another to a J.C. Higgins M50. They're about 1/8" thick and give a great sight picture with a peep.

I added one of those too, it is noticeably more visible.

Hey, Mike, I've got a 1A in 7x57 and I favor 175 grain bullets, too. I'll be very interested indeed, to know what size front sight you settle on!

I ended up using the tallest one,I believe .435.

Still shoots a little high,but with a 6 O,clock hold is right on.

One thing,
It's a little longer than Ruger's sight,I'm going to have to take it back off,and file off about 1/4" from the base.

Mike, if it's still shooting high, why are you filing anything off? Apologies if I didn't understand your post.

I'm going to file off some of the length of the base,not the heigth.

It's longer than the ruger dovetail.
