Per the story, it is a Remington, but I have no idea on the cartridges.

I believe this rifle and knife are in a museum in Craig, Colorado. A man whos last name is Makey I believe, started collection old ranch gear from old timers. Eventually he wrote a book and the donated his collection to the museum. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
