That's a nice bonus....

Holy smokes that's big ol cat! shocked Bet he was surprised to walk up on that fella.
Posted By: HitnRun Re: unintentional catch..... - 02/02/21
No better than that cat is caught in that trap, I would speculate there may be a bullet hole in that cat.
Posted By: shootAI Re: unintentional catch..... - 02/02/21
Just got him by the toe. Nice catch.
So much unpopulated space inColorado and the lion steps right there where the trap was waiting for coyotes. I didn't know that cats can be so stupid. But if the shoe fits, wear it.
Wow, that would make a heckuva catch circle!

That's a biggun for sure. To be honest, I hope I never catch one. Bobcats are ok, but not one of them.

Don, thanks for the pic.
Boy that was a surprise for sure

Knock em on the head with a piece of rebar. No thing.
Damn big kitty. Nice catch.

I had me an unintentional catch this weekend too. Not that exciting though as it was dead in a snare.

That's a really nice, big lion.

I’d take the gulo, myself. That is a damn nice looking one. I caught one in a 120 set for marten a couple of years ago. By the looks of it, he wasn’t held long 😃 like maybe three seconds, lol

Ok, we don't have those things in La., so what is it?

Big trouble in a small package.
Posted By: 1minute Re: unintentional catch..... - 02/03/21
Looks a little scruffy. Might clean up though. Have always heard that cats don't savor pain and rarely fight a trap. Still a bit of surprise if one was walking up with a head bopper finishing tool.
The cat fought the trap hard enuff to pull the stake. The trapper treed him later with his dogs, still wearing the trap.

Wow, caught by one toe (maybe two-hard to tell by the pic) and that catch was stronger than the stake huh? That's crazy.

Bobcats and lynx sure don't fight traps much, but I guess maybe lions do? I've never caught one though I know a fair number of folks who have. They always say releasing them is a bit sporty, even with a snare pole or notched plywood sheet. Bonking them on the nose I guess can knock them out just long enough to get them out, but I know of at least one lion that died by doing that.

Wolverine.
Not a huge one but not a pup either. Caught her in a lynx snare. I have never seen a snare so coiled up and wrecked.

That trap looks like Those MB750s my brother sets for coyote. He claims they are STOUT! Now I believe it.
Both of those are bad-ass critters that's for damn sure

I've heard of prairie lions, but dang that is a big cat!

Exactly... that cat would have RIPPED a couple of toes off and been gone in a minute.
you guys don't know, what you don't know......

That's a lion to me, cats are bobcat, lynx, housecats, etc.

I have no experience trapping lions, but I have caught fox, coyotes and bobcats across two toes and not as well as huntsmans's picture shows. The animals don't go anywhere. I caught a red fox by the pad of his foot well enough to hold him until I ran my sets.

I don't know what size trap is on that lion's foot, but compared to his paw, it's a big trap.....I guess what I'm trying to say is, most traps if properly maintained are stout; skookum for you boys out West, but they don't come off and animals usually don't pull out of them. Pull the stakes, yeah that cat is big enough to pull the stake on a coyote trap, but that trap ain't coming off.

Perhaps huntsman's reply above is correct.

My guess is, said trapper used bait, food lure, urine or a combination of the aforementioned. That would explain why the cat stepped right where the trap was waiting. SMH.

Of course it is. That guy didn't fall off the turnip truck yesterday...grin

Cats are nocturnal and secretive, but way dumber than a coyote.

That trap is too small for a 750. I use alot of em and the one on the lions foot is likely something around the size of a 550. I trapped a good size lion last week in a 750 that had killed a calf, but I prefer a new house 114 because it has taller jaws, for a higher catch. Lion feet are softer than say a wolf, or coyote foot, more pliable if you will. Because of that lions can, and do pull out of traps with a marginal catch. I have had a couple of lions pull out of 750s over the years. The guy in the photo was extreme!y lucky that he held the lion, and got his trap. I am glad he got him. And yes lions do leave a neck of a trap circle.

Pretty cool Don. Pard has trapped 3, 1 in a 330, 2 others together in #4’s. Cat in the 330 was dead, footholds were pretty calm, didn’t put up much of a fuss
That's pretty neat catch! Looks like a big lion.

When trapping in PA, I caught bear in my coon traps twice. One ripped up 50 yards of creek before he pulled the jaws out of the 1.5 coil spring. Pretty glad neither was still there when I checked the traps at 0 dark thirty in the morning.
Wolverines are the toughest critters I've ever come across. I've had the good luck of catching a lynx in a wolverine set in an area that is not known for producing lynx. I talked to the local biologist and he said the last one he heard about getting caught in that area was 10yrs prior. The trick to putting a live wolverine down is you gotta use a brown paper bag........:) If you know you know

Big kitty!

Hey Huntsman, I actually received the same photo from a buddy of mine(I grew up in the area). Good to hear some more of the story. Do you know the trapper? The rumor I heard was that it was an intentional catch with reported lion/livestock depredation damages in the area. Of course you know how rumors are, but thought it may have validity with real trapping being outlawed without the BS 30 day permission deal to do it.
Bald eagles in a trap are a real PIA

No, way too small. It looks like a Bridger #3 coil to me.

I caught a Drake Wood duck last week in an otter set. Never caught a duck before.
