Watched a trapping show today, where the guy was from Penn. He was catching coyotes in foot hold traps and then using a catch pole he would put them live in cages in the back of his pu. Just wondering the reason to live trap them?

Illegal to transport them here as it well should be

That would be my guess. There is a live market for them and I assume it is for urine collection.

It's not illegal in all states to live trap coyotes for sale to the running pens. In SC you have to have a permit to live trap and sale and seasons limited.

They run them in pens with hounds. Common in many southern states. Just spreads the coyotes around IMO

I guess I never thought of the urine collection. it would make sense

I trap coyotes starting in Jan, but I can guarantee you that I don't sell them. I terminate with extreme prejudice every one I catch. Ive got a big, deep ditch that is full of coyote skulls and bones..

I have several trapping friends who keep live coyotes for collecting urine for trapping lures.

In N.C. you can get anywhere from $65-$100 a piece for a coyote from folks who own running pens for hounds. Their fur is not worth the trouble here in N.C. Either kill them or sell them live to a pen.

The presence of Coyotes in NC is generally attributed to yotes escaping the pens and starting a wild population. In eastern NC there is an endangered species called the Red Wolf, Wild coyotes are destined to eliminate the species. Red Wolves are able to breed with coyotes, and the offspring are, obviously, not pure Red Wolf any longer.
In time, there will be no more Red Wolves, just hybreds.

Uncle Alvah is correct. Way back in the early 1980's fox hunters in N.C. began importing (illegally) coyotes from the midwestern states in order to help stock their fox hunting pens. The pens were used to train and run fox hounds without worry of the hounds getting lost or crossing onto someone else's land who didn't want dogs run on it.

My grandfather had one of the largest pens in the state at just under 800 acres. I helped build it, installing over 4 miles of welded-wire fencing through swamps and thickets that had to be cleared with a small dozer. I helped stock it with foxes.

Ironically, in the 1970's fox hunters in NC banded together to get laws passed outlawing trapping foxes in the state. Then, when they began building pens in the 80's they didn't have a (legal) reliable method of keeping the pens stocked with foxes, so they began importing coyotes to help fill them. Only "outlaw" backwoods trappers would trap and keep live foxes, but the supply of coyotes from the midwest was quickly in full swing. The coyotes were hardier and less likely to get caught and killed by the hounds.
Trouble was, those coyotes easily escaped the pens and began establishing themselves across the state. Now they are a nuisance.

EJ i don't think we would. they started hear like Trigger said they did in NC. the dumb asses that brough them here did not think about them digging out . it was the late 80's here . it is illegal here too

I dont dispute that coyotes escaped the pens and got a population started. But i know that they eventually would have made it there anyway. As they have populated everywhere else that they once were not.

Or maybe more than a few cents.

As of at the moment, I have 5 gallons of urine from my coyote in the freezer. Fresh, individual male urine is currently at 40 to 50 dollars a gallon. If you can find it! In my opinion, its priceless!

Ever seen the documentary on the Coywolves in Chicago ?

Fascinating.

Breed started in the Laurentians Parks in Canada.

Live market trapping or the possesion of live furbearers is illegal in PA. Dont know what the guy was doing unless perhaps he is a licensed wildlife control operator and was going to "euthanize" them elsewhere but not sure if that would even be legal here.

It is illegal in PA to possess a live coyote!
