Also another Rancher that can show me a den with pups... He's stayed outta the area to prevent spookin 'em. Whats the best way to attack a den? Snipe? Again thoughts greatly appreciated.

I do use a little coyote urine on my sets most of the time. I have caught coyotes with nothing more than a bedded trap in front of a small clump of grass or fescue with nothing more than a coyote turd on top, no scent or nothing. I like to change-up from time to time.
As for lures, I predominantly use Leatherwood Creeks Coyote Carnage or Mark June’s Songdog Supreme but sometimes temperatures dictate my choices there also.
Snares are good in fencerows, especially with woven wire fences where they cross under.
Concerning the dens, I don’t have an answer for that one.
I would recommend that your friend watch some Youtube videos on trapping coyotes, especially Coon Creek outdoors or Clint Locklear to name a couple. It will save him a lot of frustration. Good luck!

I appreciate that... Just getting into this. Bought a half dozen Bridger #5 as there are wolves that frequent this country. They are sitting in the drive way. Just got rained on for two days. Am I correct that I need to rust 'em up and then season them in a dye?

That’s all a matter of opinion. I’ve read where guys have painted them, threw them in the ground and caught coyotes.
As for me, I tune them, let them get a good coat of rust, and then boil them in a dye, usually walnut based dye.
You can buy that dye in a bag that mixes in up to 5 gallon of water. Just boil them for about an hour at a simmer and they will come out brown or black depending on what color dye that you purchase.
The last step is to wax your traps. This will protect your trap and some people say it locks in any scent and helps them fire a little quicker.
All I know is in coyote trapping, the two most important things are a solidly bedded trap and controlling your scent.
As for wolves, I know nothing about that other than I’ve read they are hard to trap. Good luck!

When I buy new traps I do nothing but boil them a couple minutes to get the oil off! IMO, the most important thing is proper bedding technique! Get this right and most things will fall into place once you learn where to set traps. Yotes do not willy nilly around! They love to travel road beds, fence lines, places where two types of cover meet, just about all the areas that deer also like! I have this one spot where ther is a mound of dirt. Ive caught 5 yotes off this spot, same trap!

Look for sign, tracks, scat, and the such. I employ a lot of flat sets and dirt hole sets! Once it starts getting hot I do not use bait, ants get it too quick. I use mainly urine and gland type lures when it gets hot!

Since nobody posted it, I'll tell you. Don't put anything especially urine on your traps. That's for your set. They'll stick their nose in your trap (or something will- skunk,possum, etc.) and mess up your set. Good luck

Yes, Ranger 99 is right, don’t spray urine directly on your trap. I also forgot to mention that when I get new traps I get the oil off with some type of degreaser.

Take the traps to the car wash and pressure wash them. Take them home and throw them in he weeds and let them rust for a few months. Long before all these "new improved dips" came out, we were using plain old car paint to dye our traps. You have to use the quickest drying thinner and play with the mix but when you get it right you can use wires to hang the traps from the cloths line and dip them. If the mix is correct you can dip the first trap and hang it and go to the next. By the time you got to # 12 you could go back and dip the first one. After you make a few catches the traps will need a touch up and just dip them once and you are good to go. I have done the redip and set the trap the next day and made yote catches. Lure/ urine is the attractor not a cover scent. 2 or 3 different smells at a set seem to work best on yotes ... or nothing. Just the fresh dug dirt will sometimes do the job. Use 2 or 3 different sets per locations. I use alot of red fox and bob cat urine. In the late summer I catch a stray house cat and put her in a urine catching cage and save some pee off it. Totally different smell. Most of the new breed don't know about that. A different smell the yotes aren't getting at every set. I do know Minnesota brand has excellent urines. BEFORE YOU CAN DO ANY OF THIS YOUR TRAP HAS TO BE ADJUSTED !! 1 thing I do most don't do is to put a washer between the pan shank and the pan post. Takes up a lot of the slop and makes the trap fire alot smoother.I use the washers that go on pop rivets. Use enough staking to hold an elephant. Yotes are going to work the stake to death. The den... You will need to kill the momma before you work on the pups and you need to kill her first try or she will probably move the den site. Then you can set close to the den and pick up the young ones. Ray

ALSO, you are trying to trap summer time yotes and the temperature is up. Use very mild smells and very little. Remember, a yote can smell a mouse fart !!

Do y'all guys ever use skunk?Back in my younger days when I used to trap,there was a trapper that used to say he would bet any amount of money he could catch a coyote within three days.He never would say what he used and you couldn't pry it out of him either.Every once in awhile I'd catch a skunk in my traps.I'm sorry,I been sprayed by them before and I'm not messing with them.What I learned to do was,shoot them and leave them in the trap.Within three days coyotes would come in,eat the skunk and tear up the ground from rolling around in the skunk scent.I don't know,I may have found part of his secret.I did this several times and it was the same every time.I never tried it,but I know you can buy the bottled skunk scent.I bet you could make some sets with multiple traps with attached drags and a sprinkle of skunk scent on a piece of hide or something pegged down for bait and catch multiple coyotes.

There is a trick to killing skunks so they don't spray. Stay calm and talk to the skunk softly to calm it down. Make sure the wind is in your favor { not blowing at YOU} and manuver the skunk so you can shoot it just behind the last rib and up thru the lungs with a 22 short. The skunk will put out maybe 1 drop of scent. Just let it bleed to death. Scoop up the scent spot and put it down the dirt hole or what ever and reset the trap. Set and trap both stink anyway so do not change the trap. Move over 10 or 15 foot and make another set and then put in a pissing post. To make a skunk call station AND get your trap back.. get the wind in your favor and ease up on the skunk and drop a 22 right between the ears. YOU HAVE 5 SECONDS... drop the gun, get the skunk out of the trap and kick the skunk like a foot ball to get it away from the set

Carmens canine call is a super lure but might be too much for summer time. Yotes tend to want to roll in "too loud" smells.
