Don't waste your money on this inferior remake.

They borrowed the basic plot from the original, obviously, and borrowed some scenes almost directly from the first one. But because they changed several plot devices the borrowed scenes don't even fit in well. The preachy themes are handled with no subtlety or originality, we've heard them done lots better 100 times before in movies with 1/100th the budget - including the original.

As happens too often, they spent all of their money on neat CGI special effects and forgot to tell a good story. This movie does NOT rate as a "Good Excuse for Eating Popcorn".

Helen Benson, the Patricia Neal role from the original, never even says "Gort, Klaatu barada nikto" fer cryin' out loud.
From the ads it looked like ol' Keanu was out to save the earth from....humans! I think the took a great movie from 1951 and turned into something ugly.

Wasn't the Great Guru Of Global Warming, Gomer Gore, the technical advisor on this remake?? wink

He sure could have been. shocked

Sometimes part of the director's vision gets edited out so small holes in the plot can be overlooked if the overall movie is a good story well told. I don't sit there during the movie and judge foreshadowing, character development, motive and all that - rather just sit back and enjoy the story. But when a movie disappoints like this, one can easily see where all of the disappointment lay. The story here was not told well at all and that is unpardonable.

However, Jennifer Connelly gets more beautiful in every movie she's in, so it was not a total waste. whistle
