Either No Country for Old Men or Tombstone. Yours?
I liked both of those, for different reasons. And Blazing Saddles, and on and on. Bob
i like blazing saddles too, its hilarious
and yes, tombstone was awesome, even though some of it may not be historically accurate
The Ghost And The Darkness
Could never narrow it down to just one, too many good movies made in the last 100+ years. "Favorite movies" are those that no matter how many times I've seen them, when they are showing on TV I have to watch them. In no particular order at all:
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
AI (Artificial Intelligence)
The Shawshank Redemption
A Clockwork Orange (almost anything by Stanley Kubrick)
Aliens II - the best of the bunch
Gladiator
Almost any Barbara Stanwyck movie from the 30's and 40's
The Graduate
The Wild Bunch
Kill Bill vol. I and II
Forbidden Planet
Young Frankenstein
Band of Brothers (technically a mini-series, but still a favorite)
and that's just off the top of my head. Let me give this some more thought...
Chariots of Fire
Platoon
The Deer Hunter
The Patriot
Gladiator
The Ghost and the Darkness
The Shawshank Redemption
Braveheart
"
The Return Of Red River Johnny." No one will ever top
that one.
Second in line would have to be "
Gone With The Wind."
L.W.
"The Return of Red River Johnny."
Leanwolf, if I remember you correctly, I must ask if you were involved with that one.
I'm clueless. Never heard of "The Return of Red River Johnny".
"The Return of Red River Johnny."
Leanwolf, if I remember you correctly, I must ask if you were involved with that one.
Nahh, John, I'n not
that old. Actually, I saw that flick many years ago, one summer Saturday afternoon at a theatre in the small rural town in which I grew up. I was home from my Freshman year in college and thought I'd drop in the theater for a good Saturday afternoon shoot-'em-up double feature.
It was undoubtedly the all time worst movie I had ever seen... and I had watched a
whole bunch of movies growing up. After it was over, I went and got my best friend, same age, who also, as I, loved movies, good, bad, or mediocre. I told him, "You have got to see this western movie! You'll never see another one like it!"
We went back to the theater so he could see it too. Afterward he said, "I oughta kill you for completely wasting 90 precious minutes of my life."
Fifty years later he and I still laugh about it. It had not one actor in it I'd ever seen before, even on the Saturday afternoon "B" and "C" movies.
Years afterward in Los Angeles, I was the Story Editor on a western teevee show at MGM. One day in the producer's office, a conversation came up about really bad westerns. I told them about
The Return Of Red River Johnny. No one had heard of it but curiosity was aroused in everyone, including the star who was in the office at that time. (Filming was over for the day.) So the producer had the Production Manager try to find a copy so we could screen it for laughs.
He couldn't find a copy even in the Hollywood film storage vaults which house thousands and thousands of old flicks, clear back to many of the early silent movies. Probably a very small independent film company shooting on a shoestring and it very quickly fell into film oblivion... along with the company.
So... when someone asks, "What's your favorite flick?" I say
The Return Of Red River Johnny, hoping against hope that some one of us geezers might have seen it when young and we could share some yuks about unbelievably bad flicks.
Hope all is well over there in your neck of the woods, and also with your writing.
L.W.
I don't mean to hijack the thread but I had a young man ask me just the other day what were my favorite movies of the past 15 years. I really drew a blank. A few in my list probably fall into that category, but honestly, I think what Hollywood is producing lately is entirely forgettable. So if we can bend a little and consider television I would have to say "Lonesome Dove." My wife and I watch primarily British series we get through Netflix. In the past year we have enjoyed "Foyle's War," all seven seasons of "MI-5," and recently watched "Little Dorritt."
Band of Brothers
Gone Baby, Gone
I too like the British series' aired on PBS.
Downton Abbey
All the Dickens tales
Danger UXB
Piece of Cake
Anything with Hercule Poirot.
There is a movie on right now that makes the top 15 in my book, Signs
That is a GREAT movie! I bet I've watched it 10 times.
Bob

GotAmmo: I am so glad your post reminded me of the movie I so absolutely and thoroughly enjoyed.
"Heat"!
I would add this movie to my all time favorites list and put it near the top of my now "Top Eleven" list.
What an incredible and incredibly well made movie.
After spending 29 years in LE in a large west coast metropolitan city I can relate to just about every character (good and bad), every scenario and every interaction of characters in that movie!
I think both Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro gave THE best performances of their careers in this wonderful movie - I literally get lost in it.
The scene where Pacino and DeNiros characters have "a talk" over coffee is just awe inspiring - acting at its absolute best.
I had the same talk with about two dozen criminals during my career - although my talks were not with classey criminals - they were with bikers, Black Panthers, SDS types, drug dealers, Cuban criminals, pimps and the like.
None of whom took my lame attempts at setting them straight to heart - and most all of them ended up in the "walls" (Walla Walla State Prison).
The main shoot out scene in "Heat" actually makes my crotch area sweat.
The movie is also directed without flaw - IMO.
Thanks again for reminding me of my oversight.

Ok, I know this thread is old but I consulted it tonight because I had time to watch a movie and figured y'all wouldn't steer me wrong. I saw the Searchers mentioned several times in this thread so I thought I'd give it a shot. I figured good reviews, John Wayne... it has to be awesome, right?
Wow, what a disappointment. Talk about a crappy film. Acting is piss poor, the sissy that follows John Wayne around is a pussie AND a queer (not to mention the worst actor of the bunch), way too much boring crap like the love story between the sissy and the Swedish chick, the sissy fight at the end wtf?, and my God is it LONG! Of all the westerns, even just John Wayne films, how could you recommend this one? The Searchers is a turd among classic westerns.
The best part of the entire film, by far, is when the sissy kicks that squaw out of his bed and down the hill. That was pretty hilarious.
Jumanji and Bruce Almighty and on and on.. Tombstone would watch this weekend.
the best shoot em up/action movie I have seen recently is "The Raid: Redemption"
http://youtu.be/uWlmhMSnVdMthe best war movie is "My Way"
