One Year After and The Final Day make up the trilogy by William Forstchen about a post-nuked America. Three nukes exploded in the upper atmosphere throw the US back into the early 1800's as our electrical infrastructure and everything computer-driven is fried by the giant EMP's generated.

These books were birthed by a real commission that reported on the utter vulnerability of our nation by such an attack. The report came out simultaneous with the 9/11 commission's report and was overshadowed to the point of being buried from the public consciousness. But the essence of it this is a real and ever present danger.

Well written and compelling, each book is in the 300+ page category and a page-turner. While fictional novels, they turn on a real and possible disaster according to that commission's report. Thought provoking is realizing where the cascading effect of losing all power leads not only physically and materially but in the realm of human behavior.
