"The Western Star" is the latest in Johnson's series on Walt Longmire, Sheriff of Absaroka county in Wyoming. This story ties together a story from his career beginning and current day where a convicted serial killer gets a prison release for 'humanitarian' reasons since he has supposedly become ill and is dying. The back and forth of the two ends of the tale is thoughtful and requires paying some attention to it and this, like his other books, is engrossing and hard to put down. At 295 pages and with multiple leads and much action, much of which is aboard the steam train The Western Star (the Sheriffs Train, filled with sheriffs, a train detective and a few others), the book ends too soon, but, it certainly leads into the next in the series with a revenge kidnapping of the sheriff's daughter leaving you hanging.

If this genre appeals to you it's certainly worth a read.

Johnson is a very good writer. Good plots IMO and he is a great word crafter. I have read all but this one and will get to it soon.

I finished it yesterday and eagerly await the next installment.
