I'm going to put a scope on a Benjamin 397PA.
My two candidates are either Hawke or Leapers 3-9x40's. (mil-dot non-illuminated reticle)

Both are about the same price, which one would you recommend?

I can't comment on either the Hawke or Leapers but I recently bought a UTG Bug Buster 3x12 and am very happy with it. It came with a nice set of quick detatch picatinny rings that do not fit my Gamo but would be good on an AR. I like the focus knob on the side... it will focus down to 3 meters ( I've never seen any other scope that could do that) ( apparently some people use them to shoot houseflys and the like). I have not had it out at dawn or dusk but the optics are sharp and bright the times I've had it out shooting. It is a short compact type of scope which I felt should be a plus on a gas piston rifle as the lighter weight should not be as apt to slip from the jolts. Read the reviews at Pyramyd Air.
The stock trigger was horrible on my rifle... one of the worst that I've ever encountered on any type of gun so I bought one of the Charlie Da Tuna replacement trigger kits and the improvement is amazing. I'm a 100% sold on the trigger kit.

Hawke has a good reputation in the airgun world. Not sure about the one you are looking at. They make cheap stuff and some very good ones. Price is a good indicator of what you can expect.

I'd go with the Hawke myself based on the quality of their offerings overall.

I have a 3-9x40 mil dot scope on my Ruger Air Hawk .177 . . . I liked it so much I ordered a 4-16x 50mm Adjustable Objective Red and Green Illuminated Mil-Dot Reticle which I am going to mount on my Springfield Armory .22 cal pellet rifle. The Hawke brand scope comes highly recommended for pellet rifles, especially the break barrel piston fired, which shakes the entire rifle with each shot.





They both have adjustable parallax from 50 feet to infinity. Glass is really clear. Deadly accurate on starlings with my Ruger Air Hawk, which has been tuned by Mike Melick at http://flyingdragonairrifles.org/
