Kid got an air rifle.

Looking for a scope for it. Tried one of my good, low magnification scopes on it but it didn't work.

Air rifle has a piactinny rail for mounting.

In what way did it not work? Is the rifle a springer?

Mount combined with rail height I am guessing is not allowing adjustment.

Type of rifle will make a big difference in what kind of scope will work.

Sometimes break barrel rifles suffer from barrel droop...............the barrel and receiver are not aligned. In that case shiming the rail or an adjustable mount is necessary.

If it is a break barrel and has droop you can just bend the barrel to adjust POI. Plastic covered Gamo barrels can be bent by hand. Heavier steel barrels might need a simple jig. I just clamp them in a woodworking vice near the breech and tweek them by hand. Springers are hard on scopes and even harder if the scope adjustments are at the extreme.

I've bent a few and there was no effect on accuracy.

Barrel droop is built in to assist alignment with open sights - some European feature/theory. You will know pretty quickly if your gun has barrel droop, you will not have enough adjustment in your scope. There are mounts available with built in droop compensation. Bending barrels on a Gamo is one thing, but I'd not want to do it on a nice springer.

I agree that bending the barrel of an expensive springer might make one a little queasy. But in reality it is not really bending that much and is not noticeable. A compensating mount may be a better option if it will fit your gun and scope. However, bending is easy, free and effective. L/R adjustment can be corrected as well. Same for most PCP, CO2 and pumpers. The only difference is a barrel band to hold it in place.

I thought the "type" of recoil was the problem with scopes on air rifles, not the mounting?

Yes, in a springer when the piston slams into the end of the cylinder. It can wreck crosshairs that survive nicely in firearms.
Pump ups, or pneumatics for our Greek friends, are kind to scopes and don't jump about in the hand.

Yes. One can get some effective help if he divulges things like make and model. The springers require both seriously stout scopes and mounts. By stout, one means its warranted for springers. Lots of high end center fire type scopes can be quickly destroyed by a springer. Just went through the process of equipping Beeman R9 in a 0.22.

I'm wondering about "red-dots" on break open airguns? EOTech Tech Service told me their 512 should be OK on my Hatsan 30 caliber, but the sight costs more than the gun, so I want to be sure. Have a C-More slide-ride on it now the was an "extra" for me. Only shot it a few times yesterday, so far seems OK. An "airgun scope" off a .177 gun of mine seems to do OK on the 30, but I like red-dots for fairly short range shooting.

Replaced the scope on my Hatsan 30 caliber break action with an Optima (Hatsan) 3x9 variable that is billed as an "air rifle scope". Looks good, but haven't been able to shoot it yet.

I have four springers in my basement range. I have equipped three of them with BSA air rifle scopes from Pyramid Air. They have held up fine - a total of about 3000 shots per scope so far. The springers are two Beeman R7's, one RWS 34 and a Feinwerkbrau 300s. The Beemans and the FWB aren't all that powerful but the 34 gets after it. I previously had an RWS 48 with a BSA on it and it lasted fine. In fact, I moved it to one of the Beemans when I sold the 48.

The mounts all require a stop lug on the rail to keep the mount from slipping during recoil.
