What are the quietest ones out there? I had a spring type in .177 several years ago but it was as loud as a 22 rimfire.

Quiet is a relative term...what's "quiet" to an old, half deaf guy like me is one thing, "quiet" to a 3 year old is quite another matter.

My 22 and 25 cal PCP guns are "quiet" to me and also most of the game I shoot...my 177 RWS 48 is LOUD and my 177 Umarex Octane is louder than my PCP's and not as loud as my springer. ANY velo over about 1000-1200 fs depending on your altitude will have the "speed of sound" noise. It is very apparent in my Octane with light pellets but not with the lower velo heavier ones.

Go to the Air gun forums/links like Pyramyd, Air Gun Depot, Air guns of Arizona and/or the others and ask them...some have ratings included in the descriptions that might give you an idea.

Luck

The PCP guns with a moderator are quiet, but without one they can be very loud. Even some of the magnum spring guns that break the sound barrier with light pellets can be loud as well. In general you'll find the lower to mid powered spring guns to be quieter than the magnum guns.

Here's a few links where they tested the airgun decibels.

My .25 Benji Maruader and .25 FX Wildcat sound almost identical to my Spectre II suppressed RAR shooting CCI Standard, maybe a bit quieter.

.22 Marauder is the standard for quiet. The pellet impact is literally louder than the hammer, which is louder than the shot report. There may be some quieter guns that shoot under 500fps, but for something that has the accuracy and power to kill pests at 50yds, there probably isn't anything quieter.

Beeman R7 is quiet and a great little spring rifle. Straighshooters.com used to have a spread sheet where they compared dB of various air rifles.

Agreed.

rockinbar sold me one and it is incredibly quiet and does great damage in urban environments.

If you just need to be rid of avian pests, the .177 is even quieter. However, head shoot a sqwirl at 40 yards and it’s DRT. JSB Exact Heavies shoot best out to 30 yards or so for me, then the Monster 13.4s take the lead. YMMV.

yep. i have never heard one as quiet as my marauder. the R7 is quiet as far as non-shrouded airguns go.

I recently got a Hatsan break barrel in .30 caliber that I REALLY like, except it is kinda loud.Got hooked up with Anthony Story - [email protected] - and he made a suppressor for it at a very reasonable price. Being for an air gun, it did not require a permit or federal tax stamp. I got it yesterday, and had a chance to fire a couple of shots in my back yard. Shooting at a stack of cedar fence planks, about the only "sound" I heard was the pellet hitting the cedar (and going through 2 of the 1 inch boards without even distorting the 44.75 gr pellet). VERY happy with the device! it was made to screw into the (female) threaded end of the barrel of the Hatsan which came with a protective cap covering the threads where some factory accessory fits. The actual "barrel" of the Hatsan above the break-open point is only 14", and the suppressor is 7", which adds just enough length to get much better leverage on the barrel for cocking! Just for grins, I'll fire some shots over my chronograph to see what, if any, difference the suppressor makes in velocity.

If you want max power, the answer is a PCP with moderator- and they all sound about the same with equal power levels for caliber.

PCPs are pretty cool. You have to be pretty serious about air rifles. The Marauders are never a poor choice.

Knowing that I would eventually grow bored of mine, I got a Stoeger X20S and upgraded the trigger. Its pretty darn accurate, as well as quiet. The barrel has a true integrated suppressor baffle system. Its not as quiet as my suppressed 22 LR using subsonic ammo, but quiet enough for me at half the price of the Marauder.

Like I said, however, a Marauder is never a bad decision.

All of my springer types have been loud, I use hearing protection. The quietest are the multi-pump types like the Daisy 901 and the Crosman 2100. For indoor shooting I use 2-3 pumps, and this is done in an apartment. For pest control on birds I have found 7 pumps to be just right and I remain well away from windows to allow the room to absorb the noise, on larger pests I use a full ten pumps, and it starts to get loud, not as bad as a springer though. Gamo came out with a barrel obsorber setup to dampen the sound, I have no experience with those though.

How quiet do you need to be?
I have a TKO that fits my Crosmans and it is amazing.http://www.tko22.com/ First time out I thought it was a FTF until the pellet hit the backstop.
Also a DonnyFL on an Air Arms PCP https://donnyfl.com/ It will never disappoint. I can shoot woodchucks at the golf course and no one knows.
Last but not least a carbon fiber "Rocker1" on a hot-rod Benji Maximus. (pictured). He will machine a 1/2-20 adapter for any barrel O.D.
Either rifle, all you hear is the trigger release till the POI

My older Condor SS with a DonnyFL LDC is backyard quiet. And you guys are right, I have wondered about the shot until I heard the SMACK of the pellet on target! Or the Puff of feathers on a pest bird. I need to get out and do that some more. I use the Exact King Heavy MKII in .25 .Be Well. Rusty
