I'm looking to put together some slower plinking loads and need some help. Intended components are as listed.....

Powder is IMR Trail Boss (6 grains or so for approx. 1000 fps mv)
Primer's are 210 Federal
Bullet is a Hornady 170 gr RN
WW cases

Trail Boss is touted as a cast bullet powder. Is there any reason a guy can't run cup 'n' core's, besides reduced expansion issues, due to low velocity?

Are 210's a good primer for this powder?

RO,
Most any standard primer will work with Trail Boss.
No problem running jacketed bullets either, do it all the time with Trail Boss in 30-30, 7-30 & .308.

I think 6gr is a little low if you're looking for 1000fps. I'd have to check my logbook but IIRC that's about 2gr too low in my rifle.

Trail Boss burns clean as well.

1k fps is not critical, just a ball park velocity.

What are you running for a charge weight/primer in your 30-30 load?

Thanks...

RO,

The lowest I've loaded was 8.0gr and velocity was in the upper 600's with a 170 gr FP bullet.

So far all the velocities have been close with a given charge weight in all 3 cartridges with bullet weight in a comparable range.

In 30-30 I load 10gr of Trail Boss in Win brass and CCI200 primers with 170gr JFP bullets. Velocity is in the mid-high 900's.(16" barrel)

These work very well through a suppressor.

I find that 10 to 12 grains of Trail Boss is a good load in the 30/30 with ANY bullet weight...
Recoil is pretty much non existent...

I have been using that with 160 grain cast lead bullets...
no need for a gas check..

15 grains of Trail Boss in a 444 Marlin with a 200 gr XTP also makes a great home defense load.. even the wife has no recoil problems with that load...my 14 yr old son loves it!

Seafire what are your expected or projected velocities with those loads?

Of course subsonic is anything less than 1050-1070fps MV.

S/Duck:

I chronographed them, and they were about in the 1100 fps range...

That is about what Trail Boss is expected to do when it has a full case ( non compressed load) in about any rifle case...
or at least NON Magnums..

I have tried it in the 223 to the 30/06 to the 444... about 1200 fps in max obtainable....

so a little less should give subsonic if that is your goal..

I haven't used TB, but in another thread, one poster who had spoken to an IMR tech directly quoted the tech's warning against compressing Trail Boss.

Again, it's outside my experience and third-hand to boot, but take it for what it's worth.

Thanks Seafire and Rocky. smile

How much do you put into the 30-06 loads? Has anyone used it in the .243?

Been a while since I've checked in on this forum, but for anyone interested, I ended up using 8.5 grains of TB, with my above listed components to get an average velocity of 962 fps, in a 20" M94 barrel.

Thanks for the heads up Rockey, I'll file that away in the soft matter...

Thinking about trying some of this in one of my 303 Savages! I have only used it in a my 44 Blackhawk.
