The palace said: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

I think he was 99 years old. The royal family only gets to retire at death.

R.I.P.

No, they can quit anytime that they like. But then, no more welfare payments.

Lets face it. He lived a long life, accomplished nothing, did nothing, and his death will affect nothing.

As you might surmise, I am not a Royalist.

The man promoted liberty in former British colonies so they didn't become all communist. There aren't many people whose contribution to freedom of individuals of the world matches that of him. Plus he enjoyed hunting and hunting dogs. Had some damn nice guns.

Your lofty opinion of him is very much an exaggeration, in my opinion.

His main contribution was to wander about as the doddering old figurehead of a ridiculously obsolete monarchy.

But, I'm glad that he enjoyed his hunting and hunting dogs and very expensive guns.

As the taxpayers of commonwealth nations, we paid for all of it, not you.

The same could be said about a whole raft of professionals, politicians, bureaucrats, and money market people who are living off the public tit today and believe themselves to be beacons of free enterprise. Most wouldn't know free enterprise if it bit them in the ass. He was dealt a hand and played it well. That it was a pretty fair hand wasn't his fault. We, the working people of the world, are consistently raped by an entire class who doesn't work for their money. The British Royal family is among the least of these. GD

I liked him - He had a great sense of humour. He was one of the Royals that did not take himself too seriously.

Rest in Peace!

Who will inherit his collection of white stetsons that Calgary gave him?

His greatest achievement!

Oh, the humanity!

The pain! The pain!

They will probably be sent to a museum. Possibly somewhere in Alberta.

Unlikely. Most of the collector plate Royalists are in Ontario. grin

Prince Philip served with distinction in the Royal Navy during World War 2. He was mentioned in several dispatches for his heroism and in 1943 in the Mediterranean conflict devised a plan to save a Royal Navy ship under attack by German bombers. Those who speak ill of him at this time claiming to not be supporters of the Royal family should at least look at his accomplishments during his earlier years before he married the Queen.

Rest In Peace,
Nick

don't speak evil of the dead . it might come back to haunt you .

As much as I dislike the monarchy I must say Philip and Elizabeth are class acts.
Going forward, the queen will be in mourning for another seven days. From what I read, the funeral will have 30 people and he will be buried in the church cellar - St. George's Chapel.

The government is asking that people do not show up en masse at the palace. Don't spread COVID is what they said.

I shall commemorate his passing by watching "Coronation Street" videos on the telly.
This is actually hunting related. This is a picture of the special Land Rover Prince Philip had a hand in designing. It will be used next Saturday to transport his casket. The article suggests that he may have used it while hunting.

Prince Phillip’s Casket Will Ride to His Funeral in a Custom Land Rover He Helped Design
The modified Defender 130 Gun Bus is a decidedly luxurious take on the iconic utility vehicle.
By Bryan Hood

Prince Phillip loved Land Rovers so much one will serve as a hearse during his funeral procession next weekend.

The casket carrying the body of the Duke of Edinburgh, who died last week at the age of 99, will be driven to its final resting place at Frogmore Gardens, on the grounds of Windsor Castle, in a custom Defender 130 Gun Bus, reports The Drive. And this isn’t just a vintage Land Rover that Queen Elizabeth II’s late husband loved, it’s one he helped design.

The green Gun Bus was hand built by Foley Specialist Vehicles and delivered to the queen’s private home, the Sandringham Estate, in 2016. Crafted to Prince Philip’s exacting specifications, this model is a decidedly luxurious take on the utility vehicle. It features an extra-long, 130-inch wheelbase, reinforced frame, entirely new rear passenger cabin, loads of hinged storage, large opening windows, two roof vents, LED lighting, a green leather interior and French Oak trim. The hulking 4x4s are used by the British Army, but we would assume the royal, who was an avid hunter, likely used his while shooting game.

“We have just delivered a totally rebuilt 130 Defender Gun Bus to the Duke of Edinburgh for use on one of the Estates,” the Land Rover specialists wrote in a 2016 Facebook post, which has now been made private. “Built to his specifications in the traditional Deep Bronze Green to an ‘As New’ standard. Built onto a galvanized chassis and hand-built rear body.”

Opining as an outsider, a colonial hoodlum if you prefer, I never had much use for royalty or the historic symbolism...but now, in retrospect, I realize, I missed the point...they set a standard of dignity, politeness, and restraint that was a world standard, and will never be seen again. I can only imagine Philip's anguish, burdened with the behavior of later generations of royalty.
I have little use for royalty either. It is an institution that is past its due date. But he was still a husband, father and a grandfather. He also had friends and admirers.

He wanted a small funeral, so COVID worked to his advantage. The funeral is limited to 30 people.. He is reportedly going to be interred in a woolen (not wooden) coffin. He has long been an environmentalist. They are putting his mortal remains in the cellar of the church where the ceremony is being held.

I heard Prince Harry will be at the funeral without Meghan this time (because of her pregnancy).

Maybe now is the time for a family intervention while Harry is back at Buckingham Palace by himself. Perhaps they can talk a bit of sense into him while he's by himself and not being influenced by her.

Perhaps he'll run away and rejoin his mates back in the Army. I understand he was well liked there.

Lots of women travel at 6 months pregnancy. I think the pregnancy excuse is just to keep the heat off poor, victim Meghan.

She made an ass of herself with the recent Oprah fiasco and she’s ashamed to show her face to the family because there is no way the press would make a mockery of Philip’s funeral. Particularly since it’s also a small family affair. Much easier to play the victim half a world away. Plus, I’m sure the Royals don’t want her around stirring up shyte anyway.

At this point in time, Harry is a lost cause. He’s still enthralled by the witch. He’ll come around in a few years.

I believe it was a BBC reporter who said they expect private discussions between Harry, his brother and his father, as part of a family attempt to mend fences. Publicly, lots of photo ops.

Not the best occasion to fix things, but it's an opportunity.

good analysis
Shared grief over the death of the Duke of Edinburgh is an "ideal opportunity" to mend any rifts within the Royal Family, ex-PM Sir John Major has said

Sir John, who was guardian to Princes William and Harry following their mother's death, said he hoped it would end any "friction" between the pair.

He also said the Queen needed time to grieve for her husband.

His comments came as the Archbishop of Canterbury paid tribute to the duke in a remembrance service.

The Queen has described the death of her husband as "having left a huge void in her life", the Duke of York has said.

The Duke of Sussex will fly from the US for the service, though it is not clear when.

His wife, Meghan Markle, who is pregnant, will remain at home in California on the advice of doctors.

Covid19 does make a funeral laden with the usual pomp and circumstance an impossibility.

But, even if Covid19 were not a part of our world, it would be pointless today.

In the past, with only a few broadcast TV stations, no cable stations, and no internet, the various governments of Commonwealth countries would have mandated wall-to-wall coverage of endless repeat funeral coverage until we were ready to puke.

Today it is much too easy to avoid, ignore, and tune out.

Some things do get better.
Back when there were only a few channels, a major event would have interrupted the regular programming. Mandated? I don't think so.. Everyone would have expected to watch it on CBC. We were more colonial back when I was a child. Now, with 100s of channels from which to choose, you can watch something else.
