So the Canadian Federal court ruled that Justins covid hotels violate the Canadian Charter. It looks like the case will end up going to trial in June. I think the outcome is pretty certain now though.

Anyone not familiar with this draconian policy, it required returning Canadians to isolate in a guarded hotel for at least three days upon their arrival back to Canada. They were forced to pay for these expenses, and the conditions and food in these places were sub par at best. The government says this will cost you at least $2000, but a couple friends who have experienced it said it cost them closer to $3000. Reports of theft and sexual abuse are coming out of these places too. Keep in mind these travellers entered the country with a negative covid test too.

The Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms released a statement that the court involved in striking the injunction is not the same court that issued it in the first place. The ruling found that this type of "forced" confinement possibly contravenes section seven and nine of the charter. So it will be resolved by trial.

The justice centres litigation director Jay Cameron said, " The forced isolation of returning Canadian air travellers is arbitrary, unnecessary, and totalitarian. These quarantine hotels and restrictive measures are more consistent with a dictatorship than a free society."

A lot of us have been concerned with some of these rules for some time so its nice to see some brave souls just said no, and went to court. I think its obvious the government will lose, and Canadian taxpayers will be on the hook for the damages that will be awarded.
I think that if the feds insist on quarantining you in a hotel, then they should at least pick up the tab.

Jailing you for committing no crime and then forcing you to pay hugely for your own incarceration is certainly a violation of your Charter rights, as the courts wisely decided.

I agree. Once this is settled in court, everyone who this happened to is going to go after them. Hopefully they at least get their money back.
