I am a trophy hunter and am on the search for something over 170
B&C. I know this is pretty ambitious but you cannot get one hunting in an area without them. Thoughts Buckfever 1

I think Alberta or Sask will offer you a better chance at a 170 or better. I would give you about a 1 in 5 chance at a 170 or better hunting with the best outfitters out west. It may happen the first year or it could take 10 to 15 years at $4000-$5000 a pop before you take one. What is wrong with a 150+ buck?

Although the place I've hunted numerous times in Manitoba almost always gets at least one 180" deer in a season. Whether you can be the one out of 15-20 hunters is the mystery.

I think that sort of deer lives in all three provinces(Manitoba,Sask,and Alberta) and for that matter BC,Ontario,and New Brunswick as well.Despite hunting them all (except Ontario and BC)off and on over 20 odd years,I have seen hunters actually kill two.I have seen only two alive while hunting that I know for a certainty were well over the 170 benchmark, gross.The largest killed by a hunter in camp was a Manitoba buck that grossed in the mid 180's.....He looked like a different species.

If I had to bet the farm on killing one, I'd pick Alberta....but know full well that when it comes time for your ticket to be punched on a giant deer,it could happen just as easily in any of the provinces mentioned above.

Be ready to burn lots of tags.Unless you have already killed a pile of 160's,and are very skilled at scoring deer heads on the hoof in the seconds you have to do it,it will be really hard for you to even distinguish between a 160 and a 170.

You might get lucky but thats what it takes.

Personally, big antlers are fine, but where I come from a REAL trophy is measured in body size and weight. Maybe a Maine thing? Because to get one into the barn you gotta know what you're doing and how to do it. Not many kill truly big bucks every year around here and those are mainly hunted via tracking in snow. Some of those buck hunters will go 10-15 miles in a day if the deer knows it's being followed and eventually the deer is run down.

Maine state record stands at 355 lbs dressed from Bingham, ME in 1955 or so. Deer don't get that big unless they live a long time and they are smart. So, to me chasing a head or big horns is fine but chasing the animal they're attached to is even greater and is a greater trophy.

I'm a sucker for the hefty ones too. Kill a good buck in MB, SK or AB, and he'll have the body size and weight - in spades.

I'd go Alberta, Saskatchewan then Manitoba in that order. I think Alberta averages bigger deer over all. Do your home work and pick an outfitter that has a proven track record killing big deer.
