Hey men how do you think the deer heard did around the battleford area in sask this winter heading there in the fall thanks guys
It's still winter around there, it's about 3 weeks behind and another week of of day time highs around the freezing mark. It's been a long tough winter as it started snowing around late October and there is still a lot of snow on the ground.
We have a foot of fresh stuff this morning
One of the worst winters in living memory for me. Still no bare ground showing and I am 100 KM East of Saskatoon. Battleford is a little better, they had less snow, but still a tough one.
This 12-13 winter seems much worse than 05-06 winter that really hurt deer herd in northern Sask non resident areas. Of course outfitters didn't let hunters know about it in 06 and non residents learned of it when they didn't see many big bucks and compared notes in the airports on the way home. Something to think about for those who have or are booked in Sask. U.S. hunters often think these bad winters only reduce numbers of smaller deer but actually largest bucks are first to winter kill because they go into winter with little body fat due to running does in the rut. Weather maps show there was still > 30 cm of snow in much of northern Sask on April 14.
This next year deer hunting could be crappy in Sask....over 3' of snow down around our farm. This has been a long painful winter...i hate snow btw
Sounds like there could be some serious flooding when the thaw finally happens.
Yup, there will be. I am a councillor for our little town, we've been doing a bunch of "disaster preparation" for some time now. Not fun. Surface water will be pumped around the town instead of allowing it to run through. Farmers downstream are not happy. Taxpayers paying the bills are not happy. Good thing the ducks are happy!
