What (if any) are the general practices of guided outfitters in the NWT as it relates to defense from grizzly attacks?

Do guides typically carry a rifle in addition to the paying hunter?

I took a 375 magnum to the Yukon twice. My guide didn't tell me otherwise and seemed happy with my choice. He carried a 375 mag the first trip and a 9.3x62 the second.

He told me not to go anywhere without my rifle.

If a grizz threatens people or property, it gets "dealt with".

Yes, absolutely. Don't even go to the outhouse without your rifle. And carry it in your hands. I had a close call while guiding, because my rifle was slung on my shoulder when I came nose-to-nose with a boar grizz at 10', late at night on my way to the can...

If Grizz notice you at distance longer than 50 m away, and you notice he is closing the 50 m distance, shoot at it, do not let it closer, regardless anything. If he is closer that 30 m do not shoot it but use a bear spray to drive it further away, and when it comes to 50 m you know what to do, guide around with machine-gun or not, and if you have no bear-spray the best is stub yourself in hearth twice and you will have no time for third time... At 35-50 m you have to read the situation.

I did not know Grizz are in NWT. Did you see it at close to Yukon?

The guides will have a rifle, ....the grizz are an acknowledged nuisance, but the only attack I remember was about 3 or 4 years ago when a guide and hunter were gutting a moose. Not something to be paranoid about, ....just have to be aware.

A buddy of mine (who is older than me) grew up outside of Palmer in the 50's and 60's. He used to tell about "escorting" his sisters to the outhouse with an '06--his older brother had to shoot and kill a grizzly one night when he and his sister surprised one on the way to the outhouse.

Haha, no I believed you, but when nature calls and you're in a confined grain bin, you have two options, and I don't think the other guides would have liked it much if I had picked the second option
