Well, I have to say the fresh bear loin (back strap) was absolutely delicious !

Pan seared in cast iron, 4 minutes a side & 6 minutes in a 300*f fan force oven, to an internal temp of 162*f, cover & rest for 10 minutes.

Thin sliced & served over mashed turnip (lots of butter, cracked black pepper & full (33%) cream.

Then, same + scalloped taters, sautéed veges & pan gravy.

Also had Thai red curry bear, that was amazingly good, but forgot to take pictures.

Just got 50lbs of Jalapeno cheddar Bear smokies back. Delicious !
OK, onto deer (rifle) opener. It was kind to us too.

Lots of dry does, does & fawns seen in the morning sit.

I let 2 small bucks walk & Deb saw a good one, but never got a shot.

4pm Saturday afternoon, I heard a shot from Joes direction, in the opposing 1/4 section.

Small buck, forkhorn, but good solid body.

Meat for the pole.

At 5:45, with the light fading, something made me lightly pull down my right side window.

Good deer, on hinds, licking a high branch !

Then the ensuing nightmare of shifting gear, setting up & shooting left handed out of the right side window, all without spooking the deer.

By the time I got back on the deer, he was quartering to me & knew the gig was up.

25-06 barks, good solid hit, deer hunches up & runs.

POA was just inside facing shoulder, to exit behind opposite shoulder.

You can see a tiny exit, mid body, slight blood leak.

Back story, had some issues getting my normal 115gr SST's shoot consistently & with no time left to dick around, I went to my usual fall back, 117gr Federal Fusion.

[Linked Image]

Bone & ribs going in, top of heart, lungs & creased the liver & 2 ribs going out of the cavity, found under hide !

Shank side, to show integrity of shank.

Hung, gutted, skinned & cleaned up.

Butcher & vacuum pack on Thursday night, 'cause we leave for Europe on Wednesday evening.

crazy
Throw some grouse into the mix !

Paul;
Good evening to you sir, I'll dispense with my usual salutation as I see you're all doing just fine!

Hearty congratulations to you and your good wife for the grand season you're having. It's nice to see families that hunt together and you all have put in the effort so its good to see you reaping the rewards.

I too very much enjoy the food photos, so thanks for those as well.

We're in a bit of a down cycle for both mulies and whitetails out here and while we've put in a lot of hours together and had grand times together afield, thus far our daughter and I have only a couple rabbits to show for the season.

Thanks again sir and all the best to you all in your remaining hunts.

Dwayne
Dwayne, you, and Paul are two good eggs.

wabigoon;
Good evening to you sir, I hope all is well with you and your fine family tonight.

You've always been very kind to me wabigoon and for that I'm grateful and say thank you very much.

That is by the way, a nice a looking herd as I've seen. They look to be mostly Black Angus to me, is that correct?

The Angus strains have certainly come to the forefront out west here in the last couple of decades. Used to be way more Hereford crosses but slowly it's gone to Angus strains as far as I've noticed.

Thanks again sir and all the best to you all this fall.

Thank you !

Game meat & fish are a huge part of our diet.

Astonishingly, we are both quite healthy !

Richard,

T-bones on the hoof, are never a bad thing !!

Really enjoyed the ones we shared this summer.

Thanks for taking the time to put this thread together. GREAT job on the fine pictures.
Thanks LBK !!

Anticosti this year ?

If so, hope you have a blast, & post the good stuff, as always.
Yes, however they have a case of CWD in the western part of Quebec Province. Maine, NH, Vermont, Massachusetts have put a ban on bringing deer pars back without the meat being de-boned. I am bringing several knives with me so I can do my own if powers to be say they won't. All up in the air. Thanks for asking. Be pretty hard to top this one. FINE post for reading and looking.
Excellent.. Roosters this next week the another go at whitetails.
So far I have some waterfowl and roosters in the freezer. Headed out looking to close an antlered elk tag, hopefully in the AM, but I have all next week as well to hunt.
Access has been tough in SE Alberta this Fall due to fire concerns but I have access to a couple rather large ranches.
No deer tag this year, by choice. I don't want any distractions from my elk hunt.
Jeff
So far so good. My brother flew in from out of province for non-res Archery WT and got a decent buck. I got two Antelopes down south and got back home in time to fill my Archery Mule Deer tag. Now on to fill the few Whitetail tags between my wife and I.

Have a bull moose draw in BC Region 5....I've seen 15 moose on the past 6 days, but no bulls. Last day is tomorrow, so hopefully to tomorrow is THE day.

Cheers,

Finishing off the season with family and friends. It's been a good one.
Nice going Pat.

But isn't that normal for you ?

I honestly enjoy the helping & educating of others, so look forward to hunting with my Wife & Son, now that I'm done too !

Season's over for us and we managed to tag:

Three WT Bucks (myself, brother and father in-law)
One Mule Buck
One Antelope Buck
One Antelope Doe

Also, since my season finished early, I went out hunting with a few buddies who were struggling and got three guys on good WT bucks and the fourth decided not to shoot any of the many WT good bucks I put him on, not big enough he said. That was a decision he came to regret on the last evening of the season. Like I told him, don't ever pass on the first day something you would beg for on the last.

Overall, it was a great season and everyone had fun, including my buddy who didn't shoot anything!
Never had less shooting and saw less sign than this season. Granted, I dont bow hunt so maybe it was a great fall, but this ML/shotgun season is dead by me.

I heard 10 shots opening day. In NJ, thats pretty absurd.

Great Stuff LBK !!

Butt ugly, youth model, savage M11 .243 & 95gr SST made some more meat yesterday.

[Linked Image]

Damn, that ugly, cheap combo keeps racking them up !
That 95 grain SST is a GREAT choice for the .243. My wife shoots the Ruger American 7mm-08 in the same configuration as yours. I don't care for matte and plastic, but it sure makes sense for an all weather hunting gun. NICE deer. Perfect size for great eating. Thanks for posting.

Worst season ever here in BC for many of us, Moose, Elk, Mule deer way down in numbers, so in 40+ years nothing in the freezer here.
Sorry to hear that.

Our moose population has been decimated, but the Ontario MNR still sells 110,000 calf tags every year !

The mule deer herd here in Sk has exploded!!! Draws are still limited and OTC Archery was opened to more zones but us archers barely make a dent in the population...
Getting ready for the next "season" !

Newest mobile unit ready to go too. Just added hitch & hifax runners !
